It’s no exaggeration to say this: very few people have accomplished as much and contributed to the martial arts as much as Jeremy Saunders has. He’s been a competitor and coach, a ref, a judge and a behind the scenes force at major organizations for a long time. He was also an instructor that contributed to the development for many of our people, including black belts like Jesse Johns, Tyler Thompson and Pat de Puydt, all of whom made sure to be here when I got the honor of tying this purple belt on. Jeremy Saunders is always learning and staying on top of the latest techniques, and this commitment to constant improvement is what the martial arts are all about. So grateful to train with and exchange knowledge with him every time he’s at Bellingham BJJ.

Folks, exciting news: some of you have gotten to train with Shantelle Thompson since she’s been visiting the area. Now, we’ve got the chance to learn from her! Shantelle Thompson OAM will be teaching Saturday’s nogi class at 10:30 a.m. She’s an outstanding competitor (she’s won worlds three times at the colored belt levels), a thoughtful practitioner who uses jiujitsu to empower others, and someone with a deep well of experience that can benefit everyone. Honored to have her teach here, and can’t wait to learn from her. Come on out this Saturday morning!

Folks, jiujitsu is fun and floodwaters are not. Sadly, we’re canceling classes the rest of today: water started coming down from the floors above this morning around 5 a.m. We will plan on re-opening tomorrow at 6 a.m. unless something changes.

We will, unfortunately, be without access to the back room for a while until we can get it dried out and repaired. We wikl be using just the front two rooms and the two left bathrooms. Please bring full water bottles because the two bathroom sinks will be our only accessible water source for a while.

Obviously this is a developing situation, so this could change depending on when repair crews can get in, so watch this space (and check your academy email). Thanks to everyone at 6 a.m. class who helped bail, mop, dry and tarp things. Back to work on that for me now.

Fun announcement: IN JUST TWO WEEKS, we’re welcoming back Rob Biernacki for a Friday night nogi seminar! Rob is going to teach right before our marathon roll, so Rob’s top-notch instruction will lead us into those fun, long rounds. Last night was a great night: a bunch of us traveled down to Mat Chess MMA to see the well-deserved promotions of two of our friends and instructors. Kelsey Burazin earned her brown belt and Jesse Lang earned his black belt from Andrew Perkins, Mat Chess Mma Andrew . Andrew has been producing tremendous martial artists for a long time and he’s done so much to help these two (and many others) grow into outstanding representatives of jiujitsu. We’re lucky to have Jesse and Kelsey training and teaching here, and we’re so happy to see their progress. Every day they help raise the level in our academy. Congratulations y’all!

Rose Miller brought the 🔥🔥🔥 technique and ALL y’all brought the impeccable vibes yesterday. What a great day of full mats and fun. Thanks to Rose for a killer seminar and to EVERYONE from amazing schools like Bold Spirit Jiu Jitsu Academy Unicorn Jiu Jitsu and so many more who made the trip … and don’t forget that Rose Miller will be at Framework BJJ Seattle TODAY too. 👏👏👏

TOMORROW! Rose Miller visits Bellingham BJJ to teach cross-grip passing. This replaces our other classes for the day, so both the morning and 5 p.m. fundamentals class are canceled. There are still slots available to sign up! It’s just $30 for members, $40 for nonmembers. We have about 45 people pre-registered, so if you’re looking to meet a ton of cool new training partners and learn from a terrific teacher, don’t miss it!

Get fired up and prepared by listening to the BJJ Mental Models episode Rose did with Jeff Shaw covering the details on the pass. Then come train!
