Kathy Richardson is presenting at NCTM 2026 in Denver! 🎉

Join Kathy for “A Look at Children’s Thinking”—a session focused on understanding the mathematical thinking behind children’s strategies, responses, and problem-solving.

📅 October 29, 2026
⏰ 2:30–3:30 PM
📍 Bluebird Ball 1C | Colorado Convention Center

If you’re heading to NCTM 2026, come spend an hour looking beyond the answer and into the thinking. Because when we understand how children are thinking, we can make better decisions about what to teach next. Hope to see you in Denver!

Fall is full of opportunities to notice, explore, and talk about mathematics—if we slow down enough to see it.

🍁 Count and compare leaves
🎃 Sort pumpkins by size, shape, or color
🌰 Look for patterns in nature
🍎 Estimate, measure, and compare
🧮 Ask children to explain how they know

The goal isn’t just to do fall-themed math. It’s to use everyday experiences to uncover what children are thinking mathematically.

This fall, ask less “What’s the answer?” and more “How did you figure that out?”

From turning confusion into “aha!” moments, to celebrating every small win; teachers do so much more than teach—they inspire, encourage, and shape the future one student at a time.

To all the teachers out there: thank you for the early mornings, the extra effort, the endless care, and the magic you bring into your classrooms every single day. You make a difference that lasts a lifetime.

Today is a great reminder that math isn’t just in a worksheet—it’s in nature, in patterns, and in the way we care for our planet. 🌿

From counting trees 🌳 and measuring rainfall ☔ to noticing patterns in leaves and flowers 🌼, elementary math helps students make sense of the world around them.

Happy 3.14159265358979… Day! 🥧➗

Did you know the number **π (pi)** goes on forever? It represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter — a discovery first calculated by the brilliant mathematician Archimedes thousands of years ago!

The first three digits are **3.14**, which is why we celebrate **Pi Day on March 14 (3/14)** every year. It’s an added bonus to share the love of this day with our math friends over at Northern Heights Elementary School 🎉

Today is the perfect excuse to:
🥧 Eat pie
🔢 Celebrate math
🧠 Get curious about numbers with our

Fun challenge: How many digits of π can you remember? Drop them in the comments! 👇

When we move the clock forward, we’re exploring concepts like measurement, patterns, and the idea that numbers help us organize our world.
For young learners, even something as simple as noticing the clock change can spark great questions:
➕ What time is it now?
➖ How many hours until bedtime?

Real-life moments like the time change turn everyday routines into meaningful math thinking. 🌷
