Our specialty is Aerial Rescue and Rope Access for Arborists, Firefighters, Military, and Industrial personnel. Our training style is based on realities found in every day workplace situations. Frequently a tree company or other organization will have a specific skill set or technique which they want their staff to learn, or they may have needs which combine portions of several Ascension Group modules. Wanna know the key to preventing exposure problems like hypothermia and heat stroke?

It’s actually pretty simple—PREPARATION!

Bring more water than you think you need. Ensure you’re drinking some electrolytes after every liter of water. Protect yourself from the sun. Take breaks. And most importantly—recognize the early symptoms of heat illness, like cramping, headaches, dizziness, weakness and fatigue. And then go find some shade and chill for a little bit.

If you ignore those symptoms, you’re asking for a rapid progression of symptoms, which will culminate in heat stroke—a true life threat that requires a higher level of care than can be provided in the field.

Field treatment options for heat illnesses include water, rest, shade, cold packs (or spare layers soaked in water) in the armpits, groin and behind the neck or a dip in a cold body of water. Cold water immersion can lower the core body temperature by about one degree every three minutes, and is the definitive means of cooling someone off rapidly in the field.

It’s snowmelt season, so while we might have some abnormally high temperatures forecasted over much of the west this week, there’s still a high potential for an accidental river dip to be dangerous this time of year.

When dealing with cold water immersion, remember that not panicking is essential to survival. Easier said than done, right? But keeping your cool and using your energy meaningfully in the minutes after an immersion could be life saving.

Later this week we’ll discuss what to do following an unexpected immersion, including how to stave off hypothermia and when to call for help.

Rock Exotica has issued a recall notice on all 1.1” Omni Block Pulleys and associated variants manufactured from February 2020 through October 2022.

Rock Exotica is also issuing an inspection notice for all Omni Block style pulleys made from 2018 through October 2022.
