Herbarium specimen of Populus tremuloides and one of my Flora of North America illustrations
I just finished teaching a pen and ink workshop called “Reconstructing Botanical Roadkill” denverbotanicgardens at the ASBA (American Society of Botanical Artists) ASBA Conference in Denver Colorado.
Why use dry, flattened plants to work from? They’re an amazing resource when one has to illustrate plants that grow elsewhere; when it’s the wrong time of year to see a plant in bud, flower, foliated…; to observe the multitude of variations in a single species. The benefits of using dried plant material to draw from goes on and on.
However, visually reconstructing dried, flat material to look as though it’s alive and in 3D is a whole other matter!!
