Teaching Setting with The Other Side by the LEGENDARY Jacqueline Woodson. 👉Click on the "Shop" button to check it out!
Jacqueline gracefully presents a story of two young girls who are separated by racial segregation, and even a physical fence. By the end of the story, they have overcome the segregation that surrounds them to sit on the fence that once divided them. There is so much to discuss with this book, it’s hard to even know where to start!
🤔Little Known Fact about The Other Side: Did you know that it was E.B. White, the illustrator, who set the story in the 1950’s? Jacqueline’s original intent was to have it set in present day. That changes the tone, doesn’t it?
This lesson that I’ve created based not only gets kids thinking deeply about the importance of setting, but also serves as a springboard into talking about racial social justice, and the small and big steps that need to be taken to do better.
I’m so thankful for authors like Jacqueline Woodson who present such truth and honesty to spur on change of thinking and heart that has the potential to lead to action. Wow! Good stories have so much power! But what’s done with that power lies in the hands of the reader.
As always, let me know how it goes! This is a good one:).
