Robert Smalls was born enslaved in South Carolina, but while working around the Charleston harbor, and on a ship, he learned everything he could. He learned the waterways. He learned navigation. He learned how ships operated.

In 1862 Robert Smalls took command of the ship, picked up his family and others, and sailed to freedom.

And his story didn't end with escape.

He became part of the U.S. Navy, businessman, advocate for public education, state legislator, and eventually a United States Congressman.

That's why our children should know Robert Smalls.

His story teaches them that learning is preparation. Courage requires action. And our gifts can be used for purposes much bigger than ourselves.

What if we actually made room in the school week for children to wonder?

That's what Wednesday is for at Hosanna for our Rooted Learners.

Explorer Quest™ Day is an entire morning built around exploration.

Our students solve problems together. They investigate questions they genuinely want answered. They learn to explore Scripture. And during Discovery Block, they have protected time to pursue their own interests.

Because somewhere inside the child who can't stop making paper airplanes may be an engineer.

Inside the child constantly creating characters may be an illustrator, animator, or storyteller.

Inside the child tapping rhythms on everything in sight may be a musician.

We don't believe every childhood interest predicts a calling.

We do believe children's curiosities are worth paying attention to.

So we make room to notice them.

That's part of what it means to educate a Rooted Explorer.

We explore the rich histories, cultures, contributions, and stories of Hispanic and Latino communities.

At Hosanna Academy, learning about the people and cultures that have shaped our world is part of raising children who are curious, knowledgeable, and rooted.

At Hosanna Academy, Wednesdays are Explorer Quest™ Days - a day when our online Rooted Learners step outside the traditional subject-by-subject rhythm and learn differently.

One part of the day is the Explorer Quest Challenge, where students work together to solve an engaging problem using our:

🟠 WONDER — What do we notice? What do we need to figure out?

🟢 EXPLORE — What ideas could work? What can we investigate?

🔵 CREATE — Let's build, design, plan, test, or solve.

🟣 SHARE — What did we create? What worked? What would we change?

A challenge might ask students to design a campsite, build a bridge, create a pop-up business, plan an inclusive playground, or solve a problem in their community.

And sometimes their first idea won't work.

Good. 😊

Because learning to rethink, revise, collaborate, and try again is part of becoming a Rooted Explorer.

Wednesday isn't a break from learning.

It's a day to learn differently.

🛡️ ARMOR UP | Belt of Truth

Kids hear a lot of voices telling them who they are, what they can do, and what they should believe.

That's why they need to know how to recognize God's truth.

The Belt of Truth isn't just about telling the truth. It's also about knowing the truth well enough to recognize a lie.

- Know God's truth.
- Tell the truth.
- Spot the lie.
- Replace the lie with what God says.

When a child thinks, “I can't do this,” they can answer: God says He gives me strength.

When they think, “I'm not valuable,” they can answer: God says I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

We aren't just teaching children to memorize God's Word. We're teaching them to use it.

Because when they know the Truth, they don't have to believe every lie that comes their way.

Black History can teach our children to see possibility everywhere.

George Washington Carver was curious about the world around him from an early age. That curiosity grew into a life of learning, discovery, and service.

As a scientist and educator, Carver studied the soil, plants, and crops and used what he learned to help farmers improve their land and livelihoods. He saw possibilities where others might have seen something ordinary—and his faith deeply influenced the way he understood his work and the natural world.

His story gives our children an important reminder:

Your curiosity matters.
Your ideas matter.
What you learn can solve real problems.
And the gifts God gives you can be used to serve others.

This is why we teach Black history, not simply so our children know what happened before them, but so they can see examples of ingenuity, faith, excellence, perseverance, and purpose that help them imagine what is possible for their own lives.

Talk with your child: What are you curious about? How could learning more about it someday help someone else?

Education shapes far more than what children know.

Children aren't only learning math facts, reading strategies, or science concepts. They're also developing beliefs about themselves, discovering what they value, and forming habits that will stay with them long after they've forgotten a spelling test.

We spend years intentionally teaching children how to read, write, solve math problems, and prepare for tests.

But are we just as intentional about teaching them how to use their words?

We should be.

Because what a child says has the power to shape far more than a report card.

Their words can build friendships or destroy them.

They can speak confidence or insecurity.

They can solve problems or create them.

They can encourage someone to keep going or leave wounds that last for years.

Words don't just impact the people who hear them.

They shape the person who speaks them.

That's why, in a faith-based education, teaching children to speak with kindness, gentleness, truth, and love isn't an "extra." It's part of forming the whole child.

If we believe our words have the power of life and death, then teaching children how to use them wisely should be just as intentional as teaching them how to read.

Because education isn't only about what children know.

It's also about who they are becoming.

This is the God Factor in education.

Character isn't something we simply teach children.

It's something that grows.

We all want our children to be loving, patient, kind, gentle, faithful, self-controlled, and full of joy. But those qualities aren't produced by rewards, consequences, or behavior charts alone.

They are the fruit of the Spirit.

As children learn to know God, trust Him, obey His Word, and walk with Him, the Holy Spirit begins to shape their hearts from the inside out. That's why true character formation is more than teaching children to "be good." It's helping them become more like Christ.

At Hosanna Academy, character isn't a separate subject tucked into the school day. It is woven throughout everything we do—how we learn, how we solve problems, how we treat others, and how we respond when life is hard.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." — Galatians 5:22–23
