Ultimately, Dr. Raben asserts that his department's experience demonstrates that advanced technology does not have to come at the cost of the "personal touch." Instead, by automating the repetitive elements of education, he and his fellow radiation oncologists can return to what they do best: provide high-level, focused care to patients who are now truly empowered participants in their own journey.

Celebrating the birthday of Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923)!

In 1895, this German physicist produced a previously undetected type of electromagnetic radiation that he named X-rays, after the algebraic term for an unknown quantity. This achievement earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

Roentgen recognized the great potential for the medical use of X-rays when he saw an image of his wife’s hand on a photographic plate exposed to X-rays. Soon after, medical practitioners were using X-rays to identify bone structures, locate foreign objects in the body, and perform other types of medical imaging.

This discovery, along with others, led to the job of X-ray technician—and later to the profession of radiologic technologist.

Delivered three Virtual Environment Radiation Therapy (VERT) demonstration sessions for prospective students and their families. Among the attendees were three practicing radiation therapists who brought their children and family friends interested in pursuing the radiation therapy program. The group included lead radiation therapists from University of California medical centers, a lead radiation therapist from the VA Medical Center in Seattle, and a senior radiation therapist from the Swedish Cancer Institute.

It was especially meaningful that the visitors from California drove all the way to attend today’s sessions. Across the three demonstrations, more than 20 prospective students and family members participated and learned about the field of radiation therapy and the educational pathway into the profession.

Prospective students also enjoyed hands-on activities using the hand pendant to operate the virtual VERT linear accelerators, giving them a practical introduction to treatment delivery and the technology used in modern radiation therapy.
