We do all sorts of pre-writing things here to get children's hands strong and ready.... and then when children are ready, they will write. I love this example from Denita at "listen to the children".
But Denita? How will children ever learn their letters if we donāt schedule time to directly instruct them?ā
Through their interests.
Pierce was very interested in the people in his life, so those are the letters he was first intrinsically motivated to know and he was also motivated to write those letters to show the people who mean the most to him that he loves them.
How did I know he was interested in writing these letters? Because he let me know:
Pierce : āDenita!!!? Will you show me how to write a āJā? Look, I can make my brotherās āBā and Lidiaās āLā, and my āPā. Now I want to make Daddyās āJā.ā
I showed him how on my own paper, and let HIS HAND, with HIS CURRENT ABILITY, form the letter HIMSELF on HIS paper. My hand did NOT need to make his hand form the letter in order to please my adult brain.
Pierce had been given ample time to develop his body and brain through HIS play. Not play that was directed by an adult with specific goals and objectives.
His body and brain were ready, and now, he had his very own reason to write.
This photo shows his very first attempt at writing these letters, ever. Take a look! Those are darn good letters!
No tracing activities, or worksheets necessary. Simply a body that was given the gift of time and patience.

Some of the children have really been excited about dinosaurs- so we got some out. There are many ways to paint a dinosaurā¦. Sitting on the ground, with your hands, just the feet, part by part, two brushed, orrrrrā¦.forget about the Dinoāsā¦. This paint feels incredible!! š„°

Mixing colors to make new colors, decorating the farm animals we have been reading about, using a little paint, using a lot of paint, being tidy, being messy, large round circles, tiny little marks. Art can be science. Art is exploratory. Each child has a different way. š„°š„°

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Valentines Day- because hearts and pink and well, itās also my birthday. I also love having parties with children because they get so excited. I invited parents to come and gather the last hour of the day today, because community. Also, so the children can show off all the fun things we do during the day. These are the little gifts I put together for them to take home. Little journals, pencils, stickers, bubbles, and fruit snack. The little name stamps are mostly for the parents, so that we can match belongings to their child š

I put out red and white paint, with paper towel rolls squished to look like hearts. I watched quietly while this little 2 year old stamped using only red. She was gentle and methodical in her actions. After almost 10 minutes of perfectly placing this makeshift stamp, she looked up with a very large smile and said, āDinosaur! I made a dinosaurā āoh wow! Tell me about itā, I said. And she said, āa stegosaurus. He is there.ā She started roaring like a dinosaur and the 20 month old across from her laughed. Then she laughed and roared again. We talked a little more and she said she was done. I asked her if she would like to add her name. This is process art.
