The NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute sponsors HIV clinical education for HIV/AIDS care providers through the Clinical Education Initiative (CEI). This program includes on-site training, conferences and online courses.

September is National Recovery Month 💜

Recovery is real—and it happens in many different ways. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all.

Recovery is strengthened through relationships, belonging, meaning, and purpose. Families, faith communities, workplaces, schools, tribal communities, and local organizations all play an important role in creating recovery-supportive environments.

This Recovery Month, we shift the spotlight from challenges to celebration—honoring the milestones reached, relationships rebuilt, and lives fully lived. Because celebrating recovery out loud is itself a powerful act of stigma reduction.

Supporting recovery also means ensuring that individuals receive compassionate, informed care for the full range of challenges they may be experiencing. This Recovery Month, we’re also highlighting an educational opportunity:

📚 Management of Persons with Comorbid Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders in Primary Care

🎙️ NEW: Conversations with CEI — Out Now!

This episode unpacks anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use and the creative harm reduction strategies patients apply to mitigate risk. Clinical Pearls 🦪🫧

🌈 AAS use is most common among cisgender men who have s*x with men, gay and bis*xual men and people living with HIV

💔 All-cause mortality increases up to 3-fold with AAS use, mainly due to behavioral factors associated with use rather than use itself

📖 The DSM doesn’t include AAS use disorder, but the addiction pattern is real

🫢 Many patients don’t disclose AAS use out of fear of stigma, or because they don’t consider AAS “drugs”

🔑 KEY TAKEAWAY: Harm reduction opens the door to better care. Building trust with patients starts with asking the right questions and listening without assumptions.
