Schools spend an ENORMOUS amount of time reacting to kids AFTER things have already gone wrong.

A student becomes overwhelmed, disrupts the class, leaves the room, refuses the work, or has a meltdown. Then the adults step in with consequences, behavior plans, de-escalation strategies, or removal from class.

Dr. Ross Greene calls that being late... but what if we got there early?

That question is at the heart of his Think Sensory Summit session with Greg Santucci, Occupational Therapist. Ross talks about what it takes for schools and educators to respond earlier: identifying the expectations a child is repeatedly having difficulty meeting, understanding what is getting in the way, and solving those problems before the next crisis happens. He also gets into how schools can make time for this work when educators are already managing full classrooms and competing demands.

This conversation also goes into areas people may not have heard Ross speak about as often, including what collaboration can look like with non-speaking kids, minimally speaking kids, younger children, and those who cannot easily explain what is wrong.

Ross is clear that spoken language is NOT a requirement for having a voice in the problem-solving process.

He and Greg explore practical ways to gather information through typing, pictures, gestures, rating scales, yes-or-no signals, and the communication methods a child already uses.

The whole goal here is to help schools get earlier while making sure more kids are genuinely included in solving the problems that affect their lives.

Dr. Ross Greene of Lives in the Balance is a clinical psychologist, the originator of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions model, and the author of The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Raising Human Beings, and his newest book, The Kids Who Aren’t Okay. His work has helped families, educators, and clinicians move away from punitive, compliance-focused approaches and toward collaborative problem-solving.
