Thursday, March 25th, 3:30-5:00 pm--Careers for English Majors

There will be a panel of faculty, advisors, and former English majors who will be here to provide information on the many career opportunities for English majors and how to prepare for these opportunities as a student at BH. Joining the panel include Matthew Bauman (Lecturer of English), Karl Lehman (Lecturer of English), Kyler Flock (former student), Erin Broberg (former student), Janette Hettick (Professional Advisor), and Andrea Bakeberg (Internship Coordinator). This meeting is especially helpful to those majoring in English (BA or BS) and English Composite, but English Ed students who are curious about opportunities beyond secondary education are also highly encouraged to attend.

2020/2021 Bellman Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Writing
2020/2021 Stewart Bellman Writing Awards Submissions

Entries may be posted starting on Monday, March 8, 2021 through Wednesday, March 31, 2021, 5:00 p.m. Because COVID-19 meant we had to postpone last year’s Bellman Awards, we are opening it up to essays from the last two years instead of just the last year. The three categories again this year are as follow, and the essays must have been submitted for a class from between March 1, 2019, and March 1, 2021. The three categories follow:

1. Composition I and II Essays (of any type for those classes);
2. Literature (Literary Analysis);
3. General Academic Writing (any discipline and type of essay).

• A student may submit up to three total essays, and those must each be to different categories. Both .doc and .pdf submission will work—please only do one of them, and be sure your entry gets verified before signing off on the submission page.
• Uploaded essays must include a title, but all other identifying information (names, courses, running headers) must be removed.
• Students will make their submissions via the Bellman Awards website, easily reached via the BHSU main webpage no later than Wednesday, March 31, 2021, by 5:00 p.m.: https://www.bhsu.edu/Academics/Arts-Humanities/English/Bellman-Awards
• Cash rewards and certificates are provided for the winners.
• Award Winners will be announced during the week of April 5 via the campus online newsletter and campus email letters to the winners themselves.
• The awards and reception will be from 4:00-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, in The Black Box Theatre in Woodburn Hall.

Become a Published Writer or Artist
Calling all BHSU student writers, artists, and photographers. It’s time to publish our annual edition of Three Peaks Review, BHSU’s undergraduate literary magazine. Our mission has always been to give student writers and artists the recognition they deserve. The creation of this magazine not only helps students get published, but it also integrates a stronger literary-arts community here in the Black Hills. The BHSU Career Development Center is hosting a virtual workshop on resume writing. The South Dakota Department of Labor staff will walk you through the different parts of a resume and its purpose. You will learn about resume rules and how they affect the development of a resume. You will also learn how to handle special skills and references on a resume. Plus, the SD DOL staff will cover how to develop a cover letter to accompany the resume.

This workshop is an excellent way to prepare for the upcoming virtual fairs at BHSU. Once registered, you will receive the link to attend this workshop via Microsoft Teams.

Writing Competition: What is your vision for 2030?

Entrants must detail their vision for the world in the year 2030, in 200 words or less. They can explore a range of topics, including technological and scientific developments, the state of humanity, the environment, and politics. The winning entry receives $1000.

A renowned team of judges who will evaluate the ideas, including Gerd Leonhard, a leading Futurist and best-selling author; Katherine Keating, Contributing Editor to The World Post; and Amir Dossal, founder of the Global Partnerships Forum.

Details of the competition be found at http://www.geediting.com/competition. It's a really interactive writing competition where we can view the entries, comment on them and create a community around our vision for the future.
