Cholesterol isn't a toxin your body is simply trying to get rid of. It's an essential building block your body needs to function.

Your body uses cholesterol to build cell membranes, make hormones, and support the brain and nervous system. And your liver produces much of the cholesterol your body needs.

A single cholesterol number doesn't tell you everything about your metabolic health.

That's why context matters.

Blood glucose.
Insulin resistance.
Triglycerides.
Blood pressure.
Inflammation.
Body composition.
Diet and lifestyle.
Your complete lipid profile.

These can ALL factor into your overall health picture and provide more insight that just your cholesterol alone.

The goal shouldn't be to fear cholesterol or to dismiss it, but we should understand what your numbers mean in the context of your overall health.

At ADS, we believe better health starts with better questions.

Not:

"Is cholesterol good or bad?"

But:

"What is my entire metabolic picture telling me?"

Think you have to go keto to improve type 2 diabetes? You don't.

For some people, a ketogenic diet can be an effective tool. For others, a less restrictive reduction in carbohydrates may be easier to sustain and still meaningfully improve blood glucose.

The important question isn't:

"What's the most extreme diet I can follow?"

It's:

"What approach improves my metabolic health and can I actually live with?"

For many people, a good place to start is simple:

1. Reduce refined carbohydrates and added sugars
2. Replace ultra-processed foods with minimally processed foods
3. Prioritize protein and nutrient-dense foods and don't neglect healthy fats
4. Pay attention to how your blood glucose responds
5. Adjust from there

There is no single carbohydrate target that works for everyone.

Your ideal approach depends on your metabolic health, medications, preferences, and response.

And if you're taking diabetes medication, carbohydrate changes can affect blood glucose quickly, so work with your healthcare team when making significant dietary changes.

You don't need to do everything at once, but you do need a strategy you can sustain.

The food industry makes money selling food.

Our healthcare system spends money treating the consequences.

What if we invested more in preventing metabolic disease in the first place?

It's hard to improve metabolic health in a food environment built around convenience, hyperpalatability, and constant availability.

Ultra-processed foods now make up more than half of the American diet. Many are inexpensive, heavily marketed, easy to overconsume, and high in refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and other highly processed ingredients.

Meanwhile, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases continue to affect millions of people.

That doesn't mean all processed food is inherently harmful, nor does it mean that there is one cause of type 2 diabetes.

It does mean we should pay attention to the environment we're asking people to navigate.

And we should be willing to ask a difficult question:

Are the foods that are easiest to sell also the foods that make it easiest to be metabolically healthy?

At ADS, we believe people deserve better information and better options.

That starts with understanding how food affects metabolism, learning to recognize highly processed foods, and making real food easier to choose.

The goal isn't to blame people for the environment. It's to give them the tools to navigate it.

Type 2 diabetes isn't a character flaw, and it isn't simply bad luck.

For years, many people have heard some version of:

"Just eat less and move more."
"Choose low-fat foods."
"Try this 100-calorie snack pack."
"Type 2 diabetes will inevitably get worse."

The reality is more nuanced.

Insulin resistance is a central feature of type 2 diabetes, and the foods we eat, our activity levels, sleep, stress, and other factors can all influence metabolic health.

For many people, reducing ultra-processed foods and refined carbohydrates, prioritizing nutrient-dense foods and protein, moving regularly, and improving sleep can make a meaningful difference in blood glucose and insulin sensitivity.

And for some people, these changes can lead to substantial improvement, reduced medication needs, or even type 2 diabetes remission with appropriate guidance and care.

That's not a promise that one approach works for everyone, but it is a reminder that type 2 diabetes is not necessarily a one-way trajectory.

People deserve more than a prescription and a number to monitor.

They deserve to understand what's happening in their metabolism and what they can do about it.

Better information creates more options.

For many people, a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes comes with an expectation:

It will progress. You'll need more medication. There's not much you can do about it.

But that's not the whole story.

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease rooted in insulin resistance, and metabolic health isn't fixed.

Nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, weight management, and appropriate medical treatment can ALL influence the trajectory.

For some people, meaningful lifestyle changes can improve blood glucose enough to reduce medications or achieve remission under medical supervision.

That doesn't mean medication is unnecessary, but it does mean we shouldn't mistake managing a disease for the same thing as addressing the factors contributing to it.

At ADS, we believe people deserve to understand what's happening in their metabolism AND what options they may have to change the trajectory.

Because a diagnosis should be a starting point for better information, not the end of the conversation.

For decades, dietary fat was treated as the problem.

Low-fat products filled grocery store shelves. Fat was removed from everything from yogurt to snacks and desserts.

But here's where the story gets more complicated:

When fat was removed from many processed foods, it was often replaced with refined carbohydrates, added sugars, and other ingredients designed to make food appealing and shelf-stable.

At the same time, ultra-processed foods became an increasingly large part of the American diet.

That doesn't mean fat caused our metabolic health crisis, nor does it mean that all carbohydrates are inherently bad.

It simply means we may have been asking the wrong question.

Instead of asking, "Should I eat fat or carbs?" we should be asking:

What foods am I eating? How processed are they? How do they affect my hunger and blood sugar? And how does my body respond?

For people with insulin resistance, carbohydrate quality and quantity matter. So can protein, dietary fat, fiber, physical activity, sleep, and overall dietary pattern.

At ADS, we're less interested in demonizing a macronutrient than in helping people understand the physiology behind what they eat.

Most people are told what to do when their blood sugar rises: Add another medication.

Medication can be an important part of diabetes care, but it isn't the only lever we can pull.

Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease rooted in insulin resistance, and what we eat can have a significant effect on blood glucose, insulin levels, hunger, and metabolic health.

For many people, reducing refined carbohydrates and ultra-processed foods, while prioritizing protein and minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods, can greatly improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity.

For some, those changes can be substantial enough to reduce medications or achieve remission under appropriate medical supervision.

That's not an argument against medication, but it is an argument for looking at the whole picture.

Because if we're only treating the number on the glucose meter, we may miss the metabolic dysfunction underneath it.

Many times the most powerful question isn't, "What medication do I need next?"

It's, "What can I change upstream?"

That's where nutrition, movement, sleep, and insulin sensitivity become part of the conversation, and, as always, talk to your prescribing doctor before making any changes to your current medications.

We often talk about insulin as if its only job is to control blood sugar, but it's doing much more than that.

Insulin is a major regulator of how your body stores and uses energy. After you eat, insulin helps move nutrients into cells and signals the body to store energy. It also temporarily suppresses the release of stored fat.

That's normal, but where it gets concerning is when insulin is chronically elevated, which can occur as the body becomes less responsive to insulin.

Here's what makes insulin resistance easy to miss:

Blood glucose can remain in the normal range for years while the body is producing more insulin to keep it there.

By the time blood sugar becomes consistently elevated, metabolic dysfunction may have been developing for much longer.

That's why metabolic health deserves a bigger conversation than glucose alone.

Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, and, for some folks, reducing refined carbohydrate intake can all play a role in improving insulin sensitivity.

One of the most important questions in type 2 diabetes isn't simply, "How many calories are you eating?"

It's also: How is your body handling carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates aren't inherently "bad," but they do have a direct effect on blood glucose. Folks with insulin resistance also have a harder time processing large or frequent carbohydrate loads.

That's why reducing carbohydrate intake can be a powerful tool for many people with type 2 diabetes.

Research has found that lower-carbohydrate dietary approaches can improve glycemic control and even reduce the need for diabetes medications and support remission.

That doesn't mean everyone needs to eat the same way, but it does mean we should stop treating carbohydrate intake as irrelevant to metabolic health.

Start with real food.
Prioritize protein and nutrient density.
Reduce ultra-processed foods and added sugars.
Find an approach you can sustain.
And work with your healthcare team when medications are involved.
