FAMILY/RELATIONAL TERMS IN TAGALOG

The Filipino words for ‘family’ are the Spanish-derived "familia" (pamilya) and the native Tagalog, mag-anak.

Core Family Terms

NOTE:
☝🏼Tagalog is pretty specific with older versus younger siblings, which English doesn’t do.
So "ate" and "kuya" are used even for non-relatives as a sign of respect.

☝🏼"Tiyo/tiya" and "tiyong/tiyang" can be used interchangeably. "Tiyo/tiya" is more formal and standard, whereas "tiyong/tiyang" is considered a more informal or endearing variant often used by native speakers.

Instead of making a standard "tee-oh" sound, the letters [t-i-y] blend together to create a soft "ch" sound, similar to the "ch" in cheese. The /-ong sound is pronounced like the word song or long with an "oh" sound.

▪️FORMAL:
This is grammatically correct, but not so common. The marker "ay" makes the sentence sounds formal and unusual in structure.

Ang pangalan ko (po) ay _____.
My name is _____.

Ako (po) ay si _____.
I am _____.

▪️CASUAL:
This is the more common way of telling your name. The marker "ay" is removed.

Ako (po) si _____.
I’m _____.

_____ (po) ang pangalan ko.
_____ the name my. (Literal translation)
My name is _____. (Natural translation)

▪️POLITE:
*Use "po" when introducing yourself to people older than you; or people with higher authority. In this context, the word "po" is used after a noun/pronoun.
