“Literacy is the gateway to Equity” - let’s take a moment to pause and reflect on what this means. It’s really hard to come to terms with a realization that something you believed is based on a fallacy or has a fundamental bias that cannot be resolved by band-aids and good marketing.

When we make choices that are based on data, have guidelines that are rooted in objective criteria, we can hopefully overcome our bias and tendency to make decisions based on “feelings”. We teach our kids the scientific method, how to observe and report facts - do we claim an experiment successful by how “happy” the outcome makes us?

Reshare: Excellent and timely podcast as we advocate and raise awareness for Harford County Public Schools to adopt structured literacy and evidence-based reading AND writing curriculum. We have started to make strides on science-aligned interventions, but we are shortchanging our kids if the core instruction can’t improve outcomes for ALL students.

Our 2019 MD Report Card data shows less than half our students are reading at proficiency- the data is even bleaker for our vulnerable populations.

We cannot settle for less than optimal investments in our curriculum.

How many of us received these reading “strategies” when our kids were learning to read.

Learn why these “tips” are not helpful for the vast majority of our students. If there’s a better way, why not use it?

This is a man excellent podcast! I learned a lot from Dr. Kastner! Check it out!

Dr. Pam Kastner is one of the most generous teachers in the field of reading, sharing her unparalleled collections of resources, hosting learning events, and serving as a literacy leader in her state of Pennsylvania and nationally. She is a true “teacher’s teacher,” believing in and providing multiple points of entry to teachers in their professional learning.

In this podcast episode, Pam discusses ways to support our collective efficacy. She unpacks the idea that sometimes behavior can persuade belief. Pam’s thoughts and words will touch a chord, as she imparts some great words of wisdom: Be kind, celebrate wins along the way, and keep all of our work anchored to kids. We are helping them become the person they are meant to be.

IF --> your child receives "tutoring" in school or any kind of extra reading instruction or intervention, the tutoring and/or interventions are likely funded by COVID-19 federal funds and/or Maryland Blueprint TSI funds.

THEN --> PRE AND POST TUTORING & INTERVENTION assessments MUST be done to measure efficacy of the intervention or tutoring program.

This requirement is part of the accountability requirements included in the Blueprint for Maryland passed by the legislature in 2021: see pages 14, 40-42 for all the requirements. The TSI portion is highlighted below (p. 14).

Exciting news, Dyslexia Advocation, Inc won a grant to help fund our dyslexia awareness program - “The Black and Dyslexic Podcast”. It’s partially funded by Morgan CARES and the center for Urban Health Disparities Research and Innovation awarded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities.

Well, through this relationship, I was able to connect my academic lead, Dr. Gibson, with the right people in this dyslexia space and I’m happy to share Morgan State University is revamping their teacher prep undergraduate program.

Morgan State University will be the ONLY College/University in Maryland accredited by IDA for their UNDERGRADUATE program.

Spring Symposium Session One:

As the parent of two elementary school children, Dr. Abdulrahman was thrust into the role of “teacher” along with parents throughout the world as a result of the COVID-19 school closures and various plans for remote instruction. The experience of observing the reading instruction her first-grade son was receiving and his subsequent frustration, along with witnessing the challenges of low literacy and illiteracy faced by patients of all ages in the Emergency Room where she works, has inspired her to advocate for the science of reading in the medical field. Join us as we have a conversation about Dr. Abdulrahman’s personal background as an English language learner, how she is balancing what she has learned about the science of reading with the instruction she sees being used in schools, and her plans for educating her colleagues about literacy as a health care crisis.

Just something to think about.

If your child did not receive ALL of their IEP services and hours during distance learning, they are entitled to compensatory services. NOW is the time to file a complaint. The state will only look back one year— don’t wait to address this. Let us know if you need assistance with this process— it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

From Senator Hester’s page:

“Last week, I presented SB126, Early Literacy and Dyslexia Practices, which would require the Maryland State Department of Education to create a stakeholder advisory group, including educators and members of the dyslexia advocacy community, to collaborate on the creation of a Reading and Dyslexia Handbook.

This would provide a powerful, evidence-based resource for parents, teachers, and local school systems to help children with dyslexia and reading difficulties succeed throughout their educational careers. Thank you Delegate Eric Ebersole for leading this effort in the House, and to the Maryland Psychological Association, Maryland School Psychologists' Association, and Decoding Dyslexia MD for their advocacy and support.

I will be talking more about this bill in my Monday Night Virtual Office Hours this coming week with Erin Parker of Decoding Dyslexia MD. Be sure to register below and submit any questions you have!”

Scarborough’s Rope – Strand by Strand
In 2001, Dr. Hollis Scarborough reshaped our thinking about the complexity of reading with her conceptualization of the tightly woven strands of a rope as a metaphor for skilled reading. These days, it’s difficult to discuss reading without referring to Dr. Scarborough’s reading rope.
Join us for this ½ hour webinar replay, in which we tease apart each strand and consider its role in pursuit of the ultimate goal of reading: comprehension.
