We've all done it. Laughed at jokes we don't understand, or forced eye contact even though we felt uncomfortable, or acted “fine” even when we were completely overwhelmed.
Maybe you feel like you have a “work self,” “family self,” and “real self." These behaviors might be signs of 'masking'.
In this week’s episode of The Brain Coach podcast, Mary explores how and why we mask in social situations, and why it's more common in people who are neurodivergent (autism, ADHD, etc.) or have a history of trauma.
This episode discusses:
- Social, emotional, and sensory masking
- The impact: exhaustion, burnout, anxiety, and feeling fake
- Trauma-based masking and people-pleasing
- Realistic ways to start unmasking and set healthier boundaries

ADHD medication and the developing brain — what does the science really say? It's one of the most common questions parents ask Mary..."If I put my child on ADHD medication, will it damage their brain?”
In the latest episode of The Brain Coach, Mary reviews current research, including neuroimaging studies involving nearly 7,000 children, and the findings are clear:
- No evidence of structural or genetic damage
- Medication can actually help normalize brain development
- Long-term data show safety and cognitive benefits when managed properly
That said, the findings show medication works best when part of a comprehensive plan that includes behavioral therapy, school supports, and ongoing monitoring. Always consult your child's physician to discuss medication.
