U.S. CATTLE REPORT 📊 USDA confirms 2nd case of New World Screwworm (NWS)

USDA APHIS confirmed a second case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in the United States on Friday. The latest detection was found in a one-month-old calf in Zavala County, Texas, approximately 5.6 miles from the first confirmed case. Federal and state animal health officials continue testing additional suspect cases in the surrounding area, with all other samples collected to date returning negative results.

According to USDA, the second detection falls within the existing movement control zone and enhanced sterile insect dispersal area already established following the initial case. New World Screwworm larvae feed on living tissue and pose a significant threat to livestock, wildlife, pets, and, in rare instances, humans. USDA officials emphasized that response efforts remain fully underway and noted that extensive preparedness measures, along with coordination among federal, state, and industry partners, have helped delay the pest's return to the United States and strengthen response capabilities.
