Chayil (Hebrew: 7!D, hayil) is a rich Old Testament word meaning strength, valor, courage, ability, wealth, or excellence. The exact shade of meaning depends on the context.
A few important biblical uses:
• "Mighty man of valour" - Judges 6:12.
"Valour" translates chayil: strength, courage, capability.
• "A virtuous woman" — Proverbs 31:10.
"Virtuous" is chayil. It means much more than simply morally good—it describes a strong, capable, worthy, excellent woman.
• "Men of activity" - Genesis 47:6. Again, the idea is capable or competent people.
• In other passages, chayil can describe an army, military force, power, or wealth.
So "eshet chayil" (7!D NUX) in Proverbs 31:10 literally carries the thought of "a woman of strength/valor" or "a woman of noble capability."
