Some days, changing the world looks a lot like this.

A piece of chalk.
A little imagination.
A child who hasn’t been told yet that their ideas are “too small” to matter.

And maybe that’s something we adults could learn from them.

At Midcities Montessori, we don’t just want our students to learn math, science, reading and history. We want them to notice the world around them. To ask questions. To care about people. To help when someone needs help. To create things. To get their hands dirty. To believe they have a voice — and that what they do with that voice matters.

Because someday these little humans really will be the ones fixing the world.

Maybe everybody is carrying a little more than we realize right now.
Maybe it’s the 100+ degree heat.
Maybe it’s back-to-school exhaustion.
Maybe it’s worrying about our kids.
Maybe it’s the constant noise of everything happening in education and in the world.
Or maybe we’re all just a little tired.
This week at Midcities Montessori certainly gave us a few reminders.
We watched our teachers run to help a 10-year-old who was hit by a car right outside our school.
We worried about one of our parents after a four-car collision.
We tried to figure out how you start a school garden when Mother Nature has apparently set Texas to BROIL for the foreseeable future.
We’re still figuring out where everything lives in our new building.
And yes… we’re even adjusting to the smell of curry and onions drifting over from the restaurant two doors down.
It was just one of those weeks.
But somewhere in the middle of all of it, I kept noticing something else.
People are still good.
People still run toward someone who needs help.
People still check on each other.
People still show up.
People still offer their time, their talents, their businesses, their connections and sometimes simply their kindness.
And maybe on this Friday, that’s the reminder we all need.
There is SO much noise right now about everything that is wrong with our schools, our communities and our world.
But there is also a whole lot that is right.
Sometimes you just have to look a little closer to see it.
So this weekend, check on somebody.
Hold the door.
Let the car merge.
Tell a teacher you appreciate them.
Support the little business down the street.
Wave at your neighbor.
Give somebody a little grace.
And for goodness sake, if you're in Texas, drink some water. 😂
None of those things will change the whole world.
But they might change somebody’s world for a minute.
And if enough of us take care of our own little corner…
maybe together we make the whole thing just a wee bit better.

It has been a WEEK at Midcities Montessori.
The kind of week that reminds you that running a school is about so much more than what happens inside a classroom.
We’ve been rethinking how in the world we start our garden when it’s still over 100 degrees outside—and apparently plans to stay that way for the foreseeable future.
We watched our teachers immediately jump into action when a 10-year-old on an electric scooter darted into traffic and was hit by a car right in front of our school. We worried about one of our parents who was involved in a four-car collision.
We’re still learning where everything is in our new space. We’re learning the quirks of our new neighborhood—including learning to live with the smell of curry and onions cooking at the restaurant two doors down every day.
And we’re learning—or maybe being reminded—that there is a whole lot happening in our world right now.
Public education is struggling. People are tired. It is HOT. And I swear, when the temperature stays above 100 degrees long enough, everybody’s stress level seems to go up right along with it.
But this week reminded me of something else, too.
There are still so many good people in this world.
People who run toward a child who needs help.
People who check on one another.
People who step in without being asked.
Teachers who do far more than teach.
Parents who support each other.
Children who remind us why all of this matters in the first place.
Maybe we can’t fix everything happening in the world. Maybe we can’t even convince Texas to turn the thermostat down a few degrees.
But we can take care of the little corner of the world that belongs to us.
We can be kinder.
We can check on our neighbors.
We can give each other a little more grace when everyone is hot, tired, worried, or overwhelmed.
We can plant things—even when we're still figuring out how they'll grow.
And we can keep building a community where people know that when something happens, they won’t have to face it alone.
That feels especially important right now.
So, Midcities Montessori family, after a WEEK like this one, my hope is pretty simple:
Let’s take care of each other. Let’s look for the good. And together, let’s make our little corner of the world just a wee bit better.

🎉 Happy 10th Birthday, Midcities Montessori! 🎉

Ten years ago today, we opened the doors to our little private school, then called Moose Montessori.

It all began because of a teacher who truly loved teaching—and the children respected and adored him for it. His love of music, his gift for connecting with students, and his ability to teach were awe-inspiring. He didn’t just teach lessons; he sparked interests and created memories that would last. In fact, my own child learned to play the Paul McCartney bass because of that teacher. 🎸❤️

That passion for teaching became part of the foundation of our school.

Fast forward 10 years, and that little school has bloomed. What started with a love for children, learning, music, and community has grown into a school filled with incredible teachers who bring that same passion into their classrooms every single day.

Teachers who know their students.
Teachers who love what they do.
Teachers who believe in community.
Teachers who understand that education is about so much more than what happens inside a textbook.

And from Moose Montessori grew the school we are so incredibly proud of today—Midcities Montessori.

Over the past decade, so many children, families, teachers, and staff members have become part of our story. Each one has helped shape this little school into the community it is today.

Ten years ago, we simply opened the doors and hoped we could build something special.

Ten years later, we get to look around and realize… we did.

Here’s to the teachers who inspired it, the families who believed in it, the children who filled it with life, and the amazing community that continues to make it home.

Wait… Midcities Montessori goes through HIGH SCHOOL?! 😳
Yep.
We get that reaction all. the. time.
A lot of people hear “Montessori” and immediately picture preschool or daycare.
And yes, we absolutely love our littlest learners.
But here's something you might not know about us:
Midcities Montessori serves students from Pre-K all the way through 12th grade.
That means a child can walk through our doors as a little one…
…and grow up here.
They can move from learning how to button their own coat and pour their own water…
to solving complex problems, having meaningful discussions, taking responsibility for their education, developing independence, and preparing for life after high school.
Same philosophy.
Different stages.
One community.
And there's something pretty incredible about watching that happen.
So since we've had quite a few new people discover us lately, let's have some fun:

Well… hello to all the new faces!
Apparently, a whole bunch of you found Midcities Montessori this week.
So we thought Wednesday morning might be a good time to introduce ourselves.
We're Midcities Montessori, a Pre-K through 12th-grade Montessori school right here in the Mid-Cities—and lately, something pretty cool has been happening.
People from our community have started reaching out asking:

That question means the world to us.

GOOD AFTERNOON from Midcities Montessori.

Okay… things are happening FAST around here, and I am absolutely loving it. 💛
When I stepped out of the classroom to spend more time focusing on our school, our families, and building connections within our community, this is exactly what I hoped for.
Not just adding “programs.”
But creating a COMMUNITY.

We are currently working through schedules and details for our after-school offerings, and I cannot WAIT to share more.

8,500+ engagements.
We honestly didn't expect that.
Yesterday, we shared a simple story about one of our parents coming to Midcities Montessori on his own time and taking down an old sign that had been left behind by the previous business in our building.
We thought it was a nice story.
Apparently, thousands of you thought it represented something more.
And maybe that's because it wasn't really a story about a sign.
It was a story about community.
It was about someone seeing our school as his school.
It was about a parent saying, without actually saying the words, “I have a part in building this place too.”
That's the kind of community we want Midcities Montessori to be.
A school isn't just the administrators who lead it or the teachers who teach in it.
It's the little ones walking through our doors for the first time.
It's the high school students preparing for what comes next.
It's the teachers who know their students as individuals.
It's the parents who trust us with the people they love most.
And yes, sometimes it's a dad showing up on a weekend with a ladder and some tools.
Over the coming weeks, we'd like to share more of these stories.
Not polished stories.
Not advertisements.
Just moments that remind us:
This is Midcities Montessori.

These words hit me hard today.
“Some children aren’t behind. We pushed the timeline ahead of their development, then blamed them for not keeping up.”
Somewhere along the way, education became a race.
A race to read sooner.
A race to master more.
A race to move to the next standard, the next benchmark, the next grade level.
And when a child needs more time, we start using words like behind.
But behind whom?
Children do not develop according to a pacing guide. They grow in different ways, at different times, and through different experiences.
That is one of the things I value so deeply about a hands-on education.
We can challenge a child without rushing them. We can hold high expectations without ignoring development. We can give children the time to build a strong foundation instead of pushing them forward simply because the calendar says it is time.
At Midcities Montessori, we don't want childhood to feel like a race.
Because education shouldn't be about how quickly we can move children through the curriculum.
It should be about how deeply we can help them grow.
Every child deserves the opportunity to become who they are—not to be hurried into who we think they should already be.
