Each year, as my fifth graders gear up to graduate to middle school, I ask them to think back and reflect on all that they’ve experienced in the art program at Lane School. As their teacher, I’m always curious to hear about their self perception as artists and about their views of both art and our art program. This activity, called “Before I Thought, Now I Know,” is inspired by a visible thinking routine that comes from Harvard’s Project Zero research.

The reflections on how my artists and their thinking have changed bring me to tears every time... 🥹

I’m SO thankful for the Bedford K-12 Art and their constant support and encouragement of my vision for our kids. And I am indebted to all the members of the Teaching for Artistic Behavior community - you inspire me daily. You won’t find a more open, resourceful, inclusive, and powerful group of educators anywhere. 💜

The Lane art program culminates in a unit on Artistic Community, where we investigate why artists learn about each other and how they can connect through artmaking. Last week, the last full week of school, was dedicated to the real-world application of these concepts as students engaged in a massive, school-wide art project called “Lane Chalks the Walk.”

Our local project borrows inspiration in name and spirit from two global art events: “Chalk the Walks” by The Joy Team and “Chalk the Walk” by Zest Events International. Like these two events, “Lane Chalks the Walk” seeks to bring artists of different backgrounds and life experiences together to explore and share a singular vision expressed through public artmaking. This year’s theme, All Are Welcome, was inspired by our bus loop banners and the BPS DEI Statement.

A HUGE thank you to all the artists, staff, parents, and community members who supported this project. It has been an incredible week of artistic creation and collaboration - a perfect way to round out another successful school year!

A wonderful collaboration between the Lane art program and the Bedford Science Center! Pins will be revealed to Grade 5 students at school next week!

Pin collecting is a fun hobby, and we've brought the excitement to Lane School! Each year, fifth graders are invited to create a science‑themed artwork for the Bedford Science Center, which is then manufactured into a collectible pin.

This year, five designs were selected for the 2026 edition! Pins will be revealed June 15–18, and every fifth grader will receive one.

To help cover the cost of this year’s project, a $3.00 donation is appreciated. If your family is able to contribute, your support helps keep this tradition going.

Representatives from and Lane School’s NEAHS presented the funds raised from their Empty Bowls service project to Diane Harris of the Bedford Food Bank today! It was wonderful for the students to see the impact of their dedication and hard work on the local community. Heather (.rose.studio) and I are both excited to keep this collaboration going in the future!

(And how appropriate to wrap up “The Year of 67” with a donation of $670 🤣)

In 1978, the National Art Education Association () began the National Art Honor Society program to inspire and recognize high school students who have shown outstanding ability and interest in art. The program supports members in their efforts to attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community. Since its inception, NAEA’s vision has expanded to include the National Junior Art Honor Society (NJAHS), designed for middle and junior high school students, and as of 2025, the National Elementary Art Honor Society (NEAHS).

Lane Elementary School was selected to pilot the program in NEAHS’s inaugural year, and we were able to complete many incredible service projects, including:

- cards of appreciation for members of Hanscom Air Force Base
- making art to fundraise for school and recess equipment
- instilling a love of creative curiosity as we worked with young children at Bedford Free Public Library
- creating handmade ceramic wares to raise money for the Bedford Food Pantry (which, I’m happy to report, was in the amount of $670!)

Thank you to the NAEA, .art, and the fabulous network of art educators and student members that we grew alongside this year. Here’s to the future!!!

The results are in! and Lane’s NEAHS raised $670 dollars with their Empty Bowls fundraiser at the 2026 Bedford K-12 Art Show! All funds raised will go to the Bedford Food Pantry to support food insecurity in the community. An amazingly impactful final project for an incredible inaugural year. Congratulations artists!! 🥳

- view and appreciate art and the artistic process
- learn how a choice-based studio works (and why it’s important!)
- make some art to keep or to share
- purchase handmade goods to benefit the Bedford Food Pantry

The Bedford Public School’s K-12 Art Show is just two weeks away!!! The kiddos have been working incredibly hard to prepare for this annual celebration, and we can’t WAIT to share their creativity with you. 🤩
