Bedford County Special Education Advisory Committee SEAC members advise BCPS on the needs of students with disabilities.

States are charged with the responsibility of identifying and providing special education for children with disabilities by way of the federal law IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Federal laws authorized under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (Amendments of 1973) and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) also ensure the educational rights of students with disabilit

ies. The state of Virginia has modeled its legal provisions after IDEA in the Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia. The functions of the SEAC, as specified by Regulations Governing Special Education Programs for Children with Disabilities in Virginia (8 VAC 20-80-90 E.2), are to:

➢ Advise the local school division of needs in the education of children with disabilities;
➢ Participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities;
➢ Submit periodic reports and recommendations regarding the education of children with disabilities to the division superintendent for transmission to the local school board;
➢ Assist the local school division in interpreting plans to the community for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities for educational services;
➢ Review the policies and procedures for the provision of special education and related services prior to submission to the local school board; and
➢ Participate in the review of the local school division’s annual plan.

Our quarterly SPED Series is designed to help families understand special education processes, rights, and tools that help students in preparing them for further education, employment, and independent living. Join us as we dive into this quarter’s topics and build stronger partnerships for student success.

The IEP (Individualized Education Plan) process can be difficult and stressful. Conflict may occur as a result of managing emotions while simultaneously following policy and procedures. IEP University was developed to help provide families and professionals with accurate and useful information around IEP development and meetings.

The annual “Hooping for Heroes” event will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026 starting at 6:30 PM at Liberty High School (Doors open at 5:30). This one time a year fundraiser supports the Special Olympic athletes who participate in the Big and Little Feet Meets that are held at Liberty High School annually. Special Olympics is a cause close to the community’s heart, promoting inclusion and empowering individuals with disabilities through sports.“Hooping with Heroes” is a basketball game that is sponsored by the school’s “Fused Together Club” that allows unified students, teachers and staff to play against our local law enforcement partners (Bedford County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Bedford Police Department and Virginia State Police).

Please come out to cheer on our student athletes, staff, and local law enforcement for an unforgettable evening of basketball and community spirit. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions and shirts to purchase to raise additional funds for Special Olympics events in Bedford County. Let’s score big for a great cause!

$5.00 general admission. All proceeds will benefit Bedford County Special Olympic Athletes.

Farmville Buddy Basketball

Our fun will begin January 16!

This special league for children with disabilities provides all children the opportunity to play basketball. The sessions will involve skill development and non-competitive games with the objective being for each player to learn basketball skills while having a great time! J

Time: Friday nights; 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Location: PEFYA Gymnasium, 2750 Layne St., Farmville VA.
