Who knew playing games could be part of OTA school? 🎲🃏

Our OTA students took a hands-on approach to learning activity analysis by playing a card game and a board game! While having a little fun, they worked on breaking each activity down into its steps, demands, skills, and performance components.

It’s a great way to see how everyday activities can be looked at through an occupational therapy lens—and how even a simple game can tell us a lot about what a person needs to participate successfully.

Learning, laughing, and analyzing along the way! 💙💛

🌟 OTA Student Highlight🌟

Meet Elise Vredeveld from Beckley, WV!

Elise chose the Occupational Therapy Assistant program because she enjoys helping others and building meaningful relationships with people. Her favorite class so far has been Modalities because she loves the hands-on learning experience.

After graduation, Elise is especially interested in working in pediatrics. 🧸

Outside of OTA school, Elise loves animals and has quite the crew at home, including 5 cats and 1 hamster! 🐱🐹 She also enjoys going to church and spending time with her family and friends.

One word her friends and family would use to describe her? “Crazy”... in the best way, of course! 😄

Her favorite Quote is from 2 Corinthians 5:7:
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

We’re excited to have Elise as part of the UC OTA family and can’t wait to see where her OTA journey takes her!

It was a busy day at the UC OTA Program today!

Our students participated in Disability Day, where each student was assigned a mock disability to experience throughout the day. This activity encourages students to consider everyday tasks, environments, and interactions from a different perspective while fostering empathy and a deeper understanding of the challenges clients may experience.

Students also participated in their first mental health group experience with our Motivational Quote Group Project! They practiced group participation, communication, and therapeutic use of self while exploring the positive impact of meaningful and motivating messages.

Lots of learning, reflection, and hands-on experiences today as our future OTAs continue building the skills they’ll need to support their clients! 💪🧠

Today, Professor Coty Dennler had the opportunity to present at the WV Housing Conference on Occupational Therapy’s Critical Role in Aging in Place.

As our population continues to age, Occupational Therapy has an important role in helping older adults remain safe, independent, and engaged in the homes and communities they love.

We’re proud to see our OTA faculty representing the profession and sharing the impact Occupational Therapy can have across West Virginia!

Today, our OTA students had the opportunity to step outside the classroom and visit the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston to learn about the history of mental health care.

Experiences like this give our students a deeper understanding of how mental health treatment has evolved over time and why compassionate, client-centered care is so important in occupational therapy.

Connecting history to practice helps our students better understand the people and communities they will serve as future OT practitioners!

Our OTA students got to try out a Robot ROM glove and experience firsthand how emerging technology can assist with hand and upper-extremity movement.

Yesterday and Today, our students participated in the Labor of Love event at the University of Charleston, partnering with the Safe Haven Campaign through iHeart Church to collect and donate essential supplies for women and babies in our community.

This is what it means to serve beyond the classroom, care for others, and make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us.

We are fulfilling our mission at UC by serving our community and living out the heart of Occupational Therapy.
