Introducing our board and people in new positions on the board -My name is Michelle Ulgasan but you can all call me “Teacher Mitch”. I am a Montessori Lead Teacher in the 3-6 classroom. I am also a faculty of TEP Philippines and Vietnam where aside from being one of the instructors, I also serve as the Field Supervisor. My involvement in the
Board started in 2018 when I volunteered to work in the Promotional and Social Media Committee. I was actively involved in sharing about the MIA schools’ activities and celebrations in my country, the Philippines.
The following year I became part of the Board of Trustees and was elected as the Recording Secretary. I made sure that I was present in each and every meeting where I was in charge of taking down the minutes. In addition, I also volunteered to chair the Certification Review Committee. My work there involved upholding our standards and assuring the quality of the programs offered in different TEPs as well as verifying the Adult Learners works before certifying them.
There were several proposals made in the Procedures and Guidelines last year in response to the concerns and suggestions of our Program Directors, Adult Learners, and the pandemic. It was a tough work but I was grateful that through this position I got to know more about our organization. This year, I was elected as the Vice President, along with continuing as the Recording Secretary. I feel honored to the trust given to me to continue serving MIA. Along with this role, I will continue to chair the Certification Review committee. I am here to be of service to the Board and all the members. I am looking forward to a better year for all of us. Together, we’ll rise up from the challenges the pandemic has brought in each one of us.

Well done, Debbie Henry - treasurer of the MIA board! Congratulations - we are proud of you and your hard work and committment.
Many providers have had to dig deep into their emotional reserves to hold themselves, their families and their child care programs together during the pandemic. For Child Care Aware of WA Scholarships scholars, the added stress of coursework has meant tapping into new reserves, including new child development knowledge learned along the way.
Debbie Henry, owner and director of the Children’s Montessori Center in Spokane Valley, has been tapping into deep wells of nurturing and studies in human development while working 15-hour days for months to care for the children and families in her large program, her staff, her extended family and the young children in her practicum class. She will soon become the first in her family to graduate from college.
“It’s been tough...I’ve had to dig deep in my human development, knowledge,” she said. Having a scholarship has been a “tremendous resource."

Introducing another new board member to our MIA community. Welcome, Punsala, from beautiful Seattle, Washington State, and thanks for serving on the board!
"My name is Punsala Hettiarachchige. I am originally from Sri Lanka and I live in Seattle, Washington. I am a Co-Director/Owner and a teacher of Happy Hearts Montessori School in Kent, WA. I am also a member of the advisory committee of the Education Department of Highline College, Kent, WA. I started my Montessori career in 2000 and worked as a lead teacher and a program director in leading Montessori schools in Sri Lanka and USA. I am very passionate about Montessori education and enjoy teaching children to reach their full potential. I believe my role as a teacher is to use my knowledge to provide an environment that allows children to thrive and grow. I hold a degree in Early childhood Education from the USA and have earned the MACTE Montessori Certificate from Montessori Teacher Preparation of Washington, USA in 2007. As an Early Childhood Educator, being a Board member will open the doors for me to share my knowledge and skills to develop the Montessori education in the community.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Punsala
