Back to school is the time to start thinking about those fall vegetables in these August Gardening Tips!

• Continue planting fall vegetables according to HLA-6009. Many cool-season crops can be planted during August. Afternoon shade may be helpful to improve germination and establishment.

• Water compost during extremely dry periods so that it remains active. Turn the pile to generate heat throughout for proper sterilization.

• Maintain consistent soil moisture to reduce cracking in tomatoes.

Congratulations!!

Congratulations to the Beaver County 4-H Clubs and Sheila Bellew, 4-H Volunteer, recipients of the 2026 Excellence in Teamwork Award!

The Excellence in Teamwork Award recognizes outstanding partnerships between Extension volunteer groups that create meaningful community impact through collaboration, service, and engagement.

When the five Beaver County 4-H clubs joined forces to support every fire department in the county, the results went far beyond providing 300 Grab-and-Go bags. Through this project, 4-H members learned the value of responding to requested needs rather than perceived needs, the importance of purposeful giving, and how collaborative planning can strengthen communities.

In recognition of their achievement, the team received an $800 cash award to support future volunteer and community service efforts.
