I’m Mike, driving instructor and co-owner of Bestway Driving Academy. Sheila and I are parents, too. We want to help your teen build confidence and safe habits, with a dad joke along the way.

ROAD TEST: ROADSIDE STOP CONTROL

Mistake to avoid: rushing the roadside stop and losing smooth control.

WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“By slowing down earlier you can make a more gradual and safer stop.”
2026 Motorists’ Handbook, Stopping, printed p. 12, PDF p. 16:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =16

ROAD TEST CONNECTION
The current Class D Skills Test Guide covers the roadside stop/start maneuver on page 2. Practice a controlled stop and the complete listed procedure:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“pretend there’s a cup of water on the dash and you don’t want to spill a drop”
AAA Parent Coaching Guide, PDF p. 1:
https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ParentCoachingGuide2020.pdf =1

Imagine the cup. Do not put a real cup on the dashboard. This is a reminder for ordinary controlled stops. React promptly to hazards; stopping safely matters more than comfort.

Parents: which skill needs the most practice, smooth stops, turns, or parking?

Parents, during supervised practice, help your teen notice the stopping location early and begin slowing down with enough room. Stay alert to traffic and pedestrians and finish the stop in the correct place. Adults, we can model the same smooth, attentive driving.

This lesson focuses on control during the DMV roadside stop/start maneuver. It is not a ranking of the most frequent test errors. AAA’s image is a practice reminder, not a physical dashboard exercise.

TEENS: TOO CLOSE? GIVE YOURSELF FOUR SECONDS.
Parents, let’s help your teen together. Today Mike shares a joke and a following distance reminder for teens and adults.

WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Giving enough room in front of you is very important.”
2026 Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 12, PDF page 16, Space Between Vehicles:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =16

Practice: when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed roadside marker, count four seconds before you reach it. Increase the gap for poor conditions. Parents, help count calmly during supervised practice. Choose a safe, legal route and discuss the gap without distracting the driver. If the gap becomes too short, ease off the accelerator to rebuild space when safe. Do not treat four seconds as enough for every condition. Wisconsin also identifies situations needing additional space, including slippery roads and following large vehicles.

ROAD TEST CONNECTION
The Class D Skills Test Guide, page 1, Business/Residential section, calls for safe space in front and beside your vehicle:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =1

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“Keep open space to at least one side at all times.”
AAA parent coaching guide, Lesson 5, PDF page 2. Keep space around you and use Wisconsin’s four second guidance:
https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ParentCoachingGuide2020.pdf =2

Watch the video linked below for exact instructions. NRSF and ADTSEA explain following distance. Their general guidance differs; use FOUR seconds in Wisconsin, with more space for poor conditions:

ROAD-TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Backing too fast and relying only on the camera.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“Back up no faster than a slow walk.”
“Look over your right shoulder through the rear window.”
Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 18 (PDF page 22), Backing:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =22

The Class D Skills Test Guide also assesses looking back, slow speed, observation and control during backing and Y-turn maneuvers. Review page 2 for the complete instructions:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“Focus on precision, not speed”
AAA also reminds parents and teens: “Mainly look directly over your shoulder when backing”.
Source: AAA, Coaching Your New Driver: Keys to Safety, Lesson 2, PDF page 2:
https://newsroom.aaa.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/ParentCoachingGuide2020.pdf =2

WATCH AAA’S CURB-BACKING DEMONSTRATION
For exact instructions, watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d6TEGsBMF1I

Parents: practice in a safe, clear location with your teen’s supervising driver present. Check the area before moving, continue checking while backing, and stop if anyone enters the path. The backup camera adds information; it does not replace looking behind and around the vehicle. Follow Wisconsin’s instructions for the test maneuver.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.

At Bestway, we’re parents, too. We know handing over the keys is a big moment. Our patient, supportive instructors help teens build confidence and safe driving habits, while Sheila and I are here to answer your questions.

We’re family owned, parent operated, and an AAA Approved Driving School. We offer online and hybrid classroom options. Payment plans are available, and we’re happy to work with families.

DRIVING MISTAKE TO AVOID
Turning your wheels the wrong way when parked uphill with a curb.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV SAYS
“If you are parked uphill with a curb, you will turn your wheels all the way to the left”
Motorists’ Handbook, printed page 19 (PDF page 23), Hill parking:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =23

This lesson concerns parking on the right side of the road. The handbook also directs drivers to use the parking brake. Downhill parking and uphill parking without a curb require a different wheel direction.

For exact instructions, watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GD1SwiuCXcA

Also available under “Driver Training” → “Hill Parking” on AAA’s website:

MIKE’S MEMORY TIP
“up, up, and away”
AAA explains: “if you’re facing uphill, turn your front wheels away from the curb.”
Source: AAA Via, hill-parking advice within “How to Parallel Park”:
https://mwg.aaa.com/via/car/how-to-parallel-park

This reel covers hill-parking wheel direction only.

ROAD-TEST PREPARATION
Review the DMV Class D Skills Test Guide, page 2, for its roadside stop/start and parking sections. The hill-parking quote above comes from the handbook; the guide does not specifically list a hill-parking maneuver.
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf =2

Parents: during supervised practice in a safe, legal location, ask your teen to identify the slope and whether a curb is present before choosing wheel direction. Use the full DMV instructions, including the parking brake.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.

Today’s joke comes with a reminder for new drivers AND those of us who have been behind the wheel for a few decades!

ROAD-TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Rolling through a stop sign. Slowing down isn’t stopping—even when the intersection looks empty.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV LOOKS FOR

The Class D Skills Test Guide says:
“Always stop before a painted stop line.”

Page 1, Turns/Stop and Stopped Intersection:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf

The Motorists’ Handbook says:
“You must come to a complete stop and wait until your path is clear before continuing.”

Printed page 25 (PDF page 29), Stop:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =29

BESTWAY’S PRACTICE REMINDER

Approach at a controlled speed and brake smoothly. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop before the painted stop line. If there’s no painted stop line, stop before the crosswalk.

Check for traffic and pedestrians, yield as required, and proceed only when clear. Simply slowing down and looking around while the car continues moving does not replace a complete stop.

Parents, practice this during your supervised drives. Help your teen recognize the stopping location early so the stop is smooth and controlled. This is one specific DMV requirement to practice, not a ranking of the most frequent road-test mistakes.

Teens aren’t the only ones who need a refresher. Some of us adults have had a little longer to practice our bad habits! We’re sharing the road with new drivers. Let’s give them a good example to follow.

ROAD-TEST MISTAKE TO AVOID
Changing lanes using only your mirrors.

WHAT WISCONSIN DMV LOOKS FOR
The Class D Skills Test Guide says:
“Check traffic to left, right and the rear before changing lanes. Check the ‘blind spot’ by looking over your shoulder.”

Guide, page 1, “Lane Change”:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bfs-d15.pdf

The Motorists’ Handbook says:
“Remember to use your turn signal before changing lanes. Move one lane at a time.”

Handbook, page 17:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Documents/dmv/shared/bds126-motorists-handbook.pdf =21

OUR PRACTICE REMINDER
Signal. Check rearview and side mirrors. Look over your shoulder in the direction you’re moving. Move smoothly when clear, keep safe space, and cancel your signal. Don’t change lanes in intersections.

Adults, this is for us, too! Some of us have had longer to practice our bad habits. Let’s set a good example for new drivers.

🚨 PARENTS, GREAT NEWS — THERE IS STILL DRIVER’S ED GRANT MONEY AVAILABLE 🚨

If you thought you missed it, you didn’t. There are still spots available through the Wisconsin DMV Driver Education Grant, but they will not last long.

💡 WHAT THIS GRANT IS
The Wisconsin DMV Driver Education Grant was created to help families cover the cost of Driver’s Ed so teens can receive proper training instead of skipping it due to cost.

For families who qualify, the grant can cover:
✔ 30 hours of classroom instruction
✔ 6 hours behind the wheel
✔ 6 hours of observation

The DMV pays the driving school directly. This is not a reimbursement program.

👀 WHO IS ELIGIBLE
It really is this simple:
✔ Wisconsin resident
✔ Age 14½ to 19
✔ Eligible for free or reduced lunch
✔ Has not previously held a driver license

If your teen qualifies for free or reduced lunch, there is a very good chance they qualify for this program.

⚠️ IMPORTANT TO KNOW
This grant is not retroactive.
If you have already paid for Driver’s Ed, the grant will not reimburse you.

However:
If you only paid for part of the program, such as classroom only, you may still be able to use the grant for behind the wheel.

⏳ WHY THIS MATTERS RIGHT NOW
The grant opened recently and is already filling up quickly.

The last time it opened, funds were gone in just a few days.

👉 There are still openings right now, but once they are gone, they are gone until the next release.

📝 HOW TO APPLY
👉 Click here to apply through the Wisconsin DMV:
https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/dmv/teen-driver/teen-sfty/degrant.aspx

Once approved, you will receive your grant coupon code(s).

Then:
👉 Register with Bestway Driving Academy here:

🚨 PARENTS, HERE IS WHAT YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DRIVER’S ED IN WISCONSIN 🚨

If you have a teen getting close to driving, you’ve probably realized something,
This process can feel overwhelming.

Between school, sports, work schedules, and everything else going on, figuring out Driver’s Ed is just one more thing on your plate.

Take a breath, we’ve got you.

🧠 WHEN SHOULD MY TEEN START DRIVER’S ED?

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of the entire process.

Your teen can complete the classroom portion of Driver’s Ed before their 15th birthday, which is a huge advantage for busy families.

That means they can be fully prepared and ready to go to the DMV on their 15th birthday to get their instruction permit.

They cannot get their permit before turning 15, but they can be ready on day one.

There is no specific Wisconsin law that sets a strict minimum age for starting classroom instruction.

However, timing still matters. Starting too early can create gaps that may require additional instruction later.

The Wisconsin DMV Grant begins eligibility at age 14½, and some driving schools may have their own starting guidelines, which is where a lot of the confusion comes from.

The key is planning the timing the right way so you are not scrambling later.

📘 WHAT YOUR TEEN NEEDS TO DO

✔ Enroll in a certified Driver’s Ed program
✔ Pass the knowledge test and road signs test
✔ Be at least 15 years old to obtain an Instruction Permit
✔ Complete 30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind the wheel, and 6 hours observation
✔ Practice 50 hours with a parent, including 10 hours at night
✔ Hold the permit for at least 6 months
✔ Be at least 16 years old
✔ Pass the road test

🚦 WHAT IS GDL?

For the first 9 months after licensing, there are passenger limits, late night driving restrictions, and stricter penalties for violations.

These rules are designed to protect new drivers while they gain experience, and give parents a little peace of mind.

💡 WHAT ABOUT THE DMV GRANT?

The Wisconsin DMV offers a Driver Education Grant for qualifying families based on free or reduced lunch.

It can cover 100 percent of Driver’s Ed, including classroom and behind the wheel.

It opened April 13, 2026 and closed within just a few days.

Good news, it typically reopens quarterly.

We help families understand how the grant works and how to be ready so you do not miss out next time.
