In celebration of Black History Month, KVLU will feature "Shout! Black Gospel Music Moments" each Sunday in February at 8pm (right between two Sunday evening favorites, "All That Jazz" and "Rock Therapy"). Tune in to 91.3 FM and kvlu.org as author and Baylor University professor Robert Darden tells stories -- and plays recordings -- from the Baylor University Libraries' Black Gospel Music Restoration Project.
This series of two-minute segments explores the distinctly African-American sound of the "Golden Age of Gospel" (1945-1975) and celebrates this fertile musical period in American history, presenting cultural snapshots that reveal the depth of a people, their community, and the influence they have had on the rest of American music.

We just dropped a new episode into the Bayoulands TALKS podcast. This episode features a conversation with Sarah Bellian from 2017. At the time, Sarah was the curator for the Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur, Texas and had just unveiled a temporary exhibition exploring the underworld of vices in southeast Texas that led to the infamous James Commission in 1961. Although the exhibition is no longer on view, our discussion still offers some insight into a fascinating period in southeast Texas history.
The Museum of the Gulf Coast plans to incorporate objects from the exhibition into the permanent exhibits at some point. Beyond that, the Museum has a wide range of exhibits that cover the history, natural history and popular culture of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. It is located at 700 Procter Street in Port Arthur. For more information check out their website at museumofthegulfcoast.org.
