Cabell sought an easier way for tenure committees, professors, researchers and doctoral students to find academic journal information in order to publish their research. Dr. “Dave” originally created his idea for a journal directory as
a class project and was encouraged by professors to pursue it further. The original printed list included only one discipline and provided basic contact information for each journal. Since its founding over 40 years ago, Cabells has expanded its services to include systems for identifying both verified and predatory journals, manuscript preparation tools, and a suite of powerful metrics to help:

The searchable Journalytics database currently lists over 11,000 reputable scholarly publications from 18 academic disciplines, each evaluated and reviewed by our journal specialists. Journal summaries include metrics measuring influence and impact across disciplines and provide critical publication and submission details making Journalytics the standard for journal quality and information for the academic and research communities. Predatory Reports is the only searchable database available to scholars that exposes predatory academic journals and documents their transgressions. Compiled by specialists who analyze suspected journals against more than 70 behavioral indicators, Predatory Reports enables the scholarly community to keep abreast of growing threats, while protecting researchers and institutions from exploitative operations. Predatory Reports now consists of over 14,000 individual journal reports – grounded in objective and transparent methodologies – which clearly identify the journals and provides a record of when and why they have been added to Predatory Reports, giving users the ability to see deceptive behaviors first-hand. Through our continued partnerships with major academic publishers, journal editors, scholarly societies, accreditation agencies, and other independent databases, Cabells provides accurate, up-to-date information about academic journals to more than 750 universities worldwide.
