šŸŒŽ It’s Interesting to See Where People Are Finding Me!

I recently looked at the visitor map for my dissertation statistics consulting website, and it was encouraging to see visitors from across the United States.

This map shows recent visitors from California to Florida, Texas to the Northeast—and this is only the U.S. portion of the picture. My website also receives visitors from other countries who aren't shown on this map.

Of course, a website visitor isn't necessarily a client. But every visit represents someone who found my website—perhaps while searching for information or assistance with the dissertation process.

When I began providing dissertation statistical assistance in 2006, reaching doctoral candidates across the country and around the world wasn't nearly as easy as it is today. Technology has certainly changed that.

If you're working on a dissertation and need assistance with research methodology, selecting the appropriate statistical analysis, SPSS, interpreting your results, or Chapter 4, take a look around my website and see how I may be able to help.

šŸ“Š Your research can be anywhere. Your statistical support doesn't have to be nearby.

One of the first questions I ask a doctoral candidate when they send me a large dataset is:

"Do you have the data codebook?"

Recently, I was asked to assist with a quantitative dissertation proposal that relied on a dataset containing nearly 1,000 variables.

Imagine opening a spreadsheet with 1,000 columns and trying to determine which variables answer your research questions. That's where the codebook becomes invaluable.

A good data codebook tells us:
āœ”ļø What each variable represents
āœ”ļø Where it is located in the dataset
āœ”ļø How it was measured (nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio)
āœ”ļø How responses were coded

Without that information, it's difficult to determine whether the proposed research questions align with the available data—or even whether the planned statistical analyses are appropriate.

The right statistical test isn't chosen simply because it's familiar or popular. It's chosen because it matches the research question, the variables, and their level of measurement.

Sometimes the most important part of the analysis happens BEFORE a single statistical test is ever run.

That's why I always say: "Know your data before you analyze your data."

If you're planning a quantitative dissertation using an existing dataset, I'd be happy to help you evaluate whether your research questions and statistical approach fit the data you actually have.

The last couple of weeks have been interesting.

After some heavy rain, we discovered water intrusion in our home caused by roofing issues. Thankfully, the roof has now been repaired, and tomorrow the contractors will begin replacing the drywall. For days, we've had industrial blowers and dehumidifiers running around the clock.

Through all of that, one thing didn't change—I was still working with a doctoral candidate, helping her complete Chapter 4 of her mixed methods dissertation.

It made me laugh thinking about it... if we ever had to evacuate by boat during a flood, I'd probably still be helping doctoral candidates—as long as we had an internet connection! šŸš¤šŸ’»šŸ“Š

Life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way, but I'm grateful that technology allows me to continue serving students no matter what's happening around me.

If you're working on your dissertation and need assistance with your statistical analyses, Chapter 4, mixed methods, or interpreting your results, I'm ready for more candidates.

As always, my first consultation is free.

"Greatness Isn't an Accident"

While visiting Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Tennessee, I was amazed by the incredible detail in the figures. Every wrinkle, every expression, every strand of hair looked remarkably lifelike.

Then I learned more about the process. A single wax figure can take months to create, involve hundreds of measurements and photographs, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce.

It reminded me of earning a doctorate.

A successful dissertation isn't created overnight. It takes careful planning, attention to detail, multiple revisions, patience, and guidance from people who know the process.

The finished product may be what everyone sees, but they rarely see the countless hours of work behind it.

If you're working toward your doctorate, don't get discouraged by the process. Excellence is rarely quick—but it's always worth it.

Thinking about using a survey instrument in your dissertation?

Today I had the opportunity to consult with a doctoral candidate about her research study. One of the topics we discussed was the importance of using survey instruments exactly as their authors intended.

A common mistake I see is researchers creating subscale analyses when the instrument was never designed or validated for that purpose. Doing so can raise concerns during the dissertation review process and may affect the validity of your findings.

Before you collect data, make sure you understand:
• How the instrument is scored.
• Whether subscales are supported by the instrument's development and validation.
• What the original author recommends for interpretation and reporting.

Sometimes a one-hour conversation before data collection can save weeks—or even months—of revisions later.

If you're planning your dissertation and would like to discuss your research design, survey instrument, or data analysis plan, my first consultation is always free.

Let's make sure your study starts on a solid foundation.

Has AI Reduced the Need for Statistical Consultants?

It's a question I've been thinking about lately.

Artificial Intelligence can explain statistical concepts, suggest analyses, and even help draft portions of a dissertation. That's impressive technology, and I use AI myself.

However, after nearly 20 years of helping doctoral candidates complete dissertations, I've learned that success isn't just about getting an answer. It's about getting the right answer for your specific research question, study design, assumptions, data, committee expectations, and university requirements.

AI can tell you what a multiple regression is.

An experienced consultant can help you determine:
āœ” Whether multiple regression is the appropriate analysis.
āœ” Whether the assumptions have been met.
āœ” How to interpret the results.
āœ” How to write the findings in APA format.
āœ” How to defend your decisions before your committee.

The most successful doctoral candidates are not choosing between AI and expertise. They're using both.

Technology continues to evolve, but critical thinking, experience, and personalized guidance remain valuable.

For those currently working on a dissertation, what role has AI played in your research journey?

I recently went shopping for car window cleaner for my SUV. Apparently, an auto service center used a silicone-based cleaner on the windows, and it made them extremely difficult to clean properly afterward.

While standing in the auto parts store, I decided to ask AI for a recommendation on the best product for the job. Within seconds, it pointed me toward products specifically designed to cut through silicone residue. It delivered exactly what I needed.

On the drive home, I started thinking… doctoral candidates can use AI in much the same way when searching for dissertation support.

If a doctoral candidate asks AI about dissertation statisticians or research consultants, AI searches across the internet and highlights experience, qualifications, reviews, publications, websites, and professional presence.

That means your online reputation matters more than ever.

For those who may ask AI about me, here’s what it will likely find:
āœ”ļø Nearly two decades of dissertation consulting experience
āœ”ļø Assistance with quantitative analyses, SPSS, Chapter 4 write-ups, and research design
āœ”ļø A long history of helping doctoral candidates successfully complete their dissertations
āœ”ļø An established professional web presence and referrals from former clients

Technology can’t replace hard work, but it can certainly help people find the right tools — and sometimes the right person — for the task at hand.

ā€œDoctoral candidates often ask me, ā€˜Can you really help if I already have the data?’

Absolutely.

Data by itself is just numbers on a screen until it’s properly organized, analyzed, interpreted, and written into a clear Chapter 4. That’s where many candidates get stuck.

Whether your study involves surveys, pretest/posttest designs, correlations, regressions, ANOVAs, qualitative coding, or SEM/path analysis — having the data is a major step forward.

Now the focus becomes:
• Cleaning the dataset
• Selecting the correct analyses
• Testing assumptions
• Interpreting the findings
• Formatting tables and figures
• Writing APA-style results narratives

If you’ve collected your data, you’re farther along than you think. Keep pushing forward. The finish line may be closer than it feels today.

Today was about more than earning a degree. It was about perseverance, sacrifice, love, and finishing what was started.

My son-in-law graduated today with his Bachelor of Arts in Business Management, and our family could not be more proud.

He and my daughter began college together, but life took an unexpected turn when he stepped away from school to help care for his terminally ill mother. That season of life demanded strength, compassion, and selflessness far beyond the classroom.

Although his mother is no longer with us, her impact and memory continue to live on through the love and determination she inspired in those around her. Today’s accomplishment is a reminder that sometimes the road to success is not a straight line. Delays are not defeats.

He persevered. He stayed committed. And today, he crossed the finish line.

Congratulations on this well-earned achievement. Your resilience, character, and dedication tell a story far greater than any diploma ever could. We are incredibly proud of you. šŸŽ“ā¤ļø

May the Fourth Be With You… and Your Dissertation Journey šŸš€

Today’s a fun one—May the 4th—and I figured my tie said it all.

But here’s the connection…

Every doctoral journey has its own version of ā€œthe dark sideā€:

* overwhelming data
* confusing statistical tests
* Chapter 4 stress
* tight deadlines

And just when it feels like the odds are stacked against you… that’s when guidance matters most.

You don’t have to navigate SPSS, data analysis, or Chapter 4 alone.

I’ve spent years helping doctoral candidates bring clarity to their data, confidence to their results, and structure to their dissertations—so they can cross the finish line successfully.

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure about your next step…

Let’s bring balance back to your research.
