Another Chapter 4 completed! 📊🎓

Last night, I finished assisting a doctoral candidate with Chapter 4 of her dissertation. This particular project was made easier because the candidate had two valuable resources: a detailed dissertation rubric outlining her university's expectations and a well-written Chapter 3 that provided a clear roadmap for the data analysis.

Unfortunately, not every doctoral candidate has those advantages.

Some universities provide detailed rubrics, while others offer less specific guidance. Some candidates come to me with a solid Chapter 3 and a clearly defined data analysis plan. Others need considerable assistance refining their methodology, selecting appropriate statistical tests, or aligning their research questions and hypotheses with their analyses.

The good news? I can help candidates at both ends of that spectrum—and everywhere in between!

Business trip + dissertation work = making good use of a little downtime! 💻📊
I took a business trip earlier this week, but I made sure my laptop came along. When I had some spare time, I was able to get in a little data analysis for one of my dissertation clients.
One of the things I enjoy about dissertation consulting is being able to help doctoral candidates move their research forward—even when I’m away from my home office.
Whether it’s data screening, statistical analysis, interpreting results, or helping make sense of what the numbers are saying, the work continues wherever the laptop opens!

📊 Data Analysis Plans & Pancake Plans 🥞

Today I’m reviewing a proposal to assist a doctoral candidate with developing a data analysis plan—making sure the proposed analyses align with the research questions, variables, and overall research design.

But apparently, I have another important analysis to conduct today. 😂

It’s National Pancake Day, and I hear Cracker Barrel has all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5 today. So my wife and I just might have to investigate that claim personally. 🥞

Some days are about analyzing data.
Some days are about analyzing how many pancakes you can actually eat.

Today might be both. 😄

📊 The data are coming in!

Right now, I’m working with two doctoral candidates who have their data in hand and are ready for analysis, while also communicating with two other candidates who are currently in the data-collection stage.

These are two very different points in the dissertation process—but both are good times to have a statistician involved.

If your data have already been collected, we can begin looking at data screening, statistical analyses, interpretation of the results, and Chapter 4.

If you’re still collecting data, this is also a good time to make sure you have a clear plan for what happens once that dataset is complete. You don’t have to wait until the data arrive to start preparing for the analysis.

📊 Before the Survey Goes Out, Get the Methodology Right

This evening, I have a methodology webinar scheduled with a doctoral candidate who will be conducting a survey for her dissertation research.

At this stage, there are no data to analyze—and that’s exactly the point.

Statistical consultation can be valuable before the first survey response is ever collected.

During the methodology stage, we can examine whether the research questions, variables, survey instrument, scales of measurement, sample size, and proposed statistical analyses are properly aligned.

These decisions matter.

Once a survey has been distributed and the data have been collected, it may be too late to correct certain methodological problems. A question that wasn't asked cannot be analyzed. A variable that wasn't measured cannot suddenly be created. And the statistical test you planned to use may not be appropriate for the data you actually collected.

That’s why I encourage doctoral candidates to think about the statistics before clicking “Send” on the survey.

🎓 Good statistical analysis starts long before Chapter 4. It starts with a well-designed Chapter 3.

🌎 It’s Interesting to See Where People Are Finding Me!

I recently looked at the visitor map for my dissertation statistics consulting website, and it was encouraging to see visitors from across the United States.

This map shows recent visitors from California to Florida, Texas to the Northeast—and this is only the U.S. portion of the picture. My website also receives visitors from other countries who aren't shown on this map.

Of course, a website visitor isn't necessarily a client. But every visit represents someone who found my website—perhaps while searching for information or assistance with the dissertation process.

When I began providing dissertation statistical assistance in 2006, reaching doctoral candidates across the country and around the world wasn't nearly as easy as it is today. Technology has certainly changed that.

I recently went shopping for car window cleaner for my SUV. Apparently, an auto service center used a silicone-based cleaner on the windows, and it made them extremely difficult to clean properly afterward.

While standing in the auto parts store, I decided to ask AI for a recommendation on the best product for the job. Within seconds, it pointed me toward products specifically designed to cut through silicone residue. It delivered exactly what I needed.

On the drive home, I started thinking… doctoral candidates can use AI in much the same way when searching for dissertation support.

If a doctoral candidate asks AI about dissertation statisticians or research consultants, AI searches across the internet and highlights experience, qualifications, reviews, publications, websites, and professional presence.
