What an amazing week with our Teamship camp from District C. We had 6 small groups that were assigned a business: either Morehead City Police Department or Fleet Readiness Center East. In the course of 4 days, they learned how to interview, ask open ended questions, discover the real problem and then work together for a solution. They interviewed their business 2 times and did one site tour at their location. I wasn’t really sure what to expect but I can tell you that today during their “pitches”, I was blown away.

Our business partners were equally blown away and discussed having our students come to meetings with council members and upper management to share their ideas. They are truly sincere, I think, in implementing these plans- which is crazy! This was such a great experience!

Huge thank you to our two coaches, that in addition to their regular teaching responsibilities, spent all spring attending classes and zoom calls and events to become certified coaches- thank you Caitlyn White and Angie Diaz Werhner- you were amazing!

Huge thank you to Carteret Community College for allowing us to use your space for our Teamship Camp this week! During this week, 23 students from all three high schools have worked together to learn about a problem with one of our business community partners: Morehead City Police Department and Fleet Readiness Center East. Today, students present their solutions to the business leaders in hopes that at least one of them or a combination of a few of them will help solve the problem! Will be posting more pictures soon! Kicking off our 2024 High School Teamship Camp with District C!
23 High School students from Carteret County Public School System are working in small teams all week to help solve/pitch a solution to a problem in partnership with two community partners: East and Morehead City Police Department! Also a huge thank you to Carteret Young Professionals for providing awesome lunches to our students this week! Day 1 and Day 2 of camp has been great! Final Pitch on Thursday! One more full work day to go- and this group of 6 will have completely built an 8x12 shed at Croatan High School! What a great experience- full of learning, fun, new experiences, meeting new people, and pride! I really didn’t expect this camp, this project, to go this smoothly.

Will Sutton, CDC @ West Carteret High School has been a wonderful leader for the boys and the actual building of this shed! Karen Davis, CDC at Croatan and Amanda Lewis, Business teacher East Carteret High School have been equally as instrumental in helping to plan, clean, assist, feed, get supplies, and run errands! If students find things they are interested in, you would be amazed at what they can accomplish! Day 2 of “working” and I’m just blown away! Even the students that aren’t as familiar with certain tools want to jump in and have asked the more experienced students for help. The teamwork, patience, and kindness has been really wonderful to witness. And look how far they got today!

I am more of the “foreman”. I am horrible with details, measuring, and “picturing” it. I am good and shopping for lunch, making lunch, and buying supplies at Lowe’s though 🙂 I cannot wait to see the finished product!! I have really enjoyed getting to know these kids from other schools too! We have some awesome students here at West Carteret High School Croatan High School East Carteret High School!!! The theme for this year’s CCPS CLASS Academy is a live project! We marketed this to students in all 3 high schools, knowing we had to maintain a group smaller than 10 students! We have spent the first two days of camp getting to know each other, employability skills, site visits, and team building! Today, however, we started day 1 of our project.

We are tearing down the old Ag shed at Croatan High School and rebuilding them a brand new 8 x 10 shed!! We have some rockstar workers too! We are ready for tomorrow: the floor and hopefully at least 2 walls! I am super impressed!

2023 CLASS (Career & Leadership Academy for Successful students) camp kicked off today! Our theme changed this year as we are completing a live project….more information to come as we progress! These first two days, however, we still focus on team building and employability skills!

Today was:

*Blackbeards Escape Room- THEY WON!!
*Using legos to build the most effective and a cost effective tower (unit cost, labor cost, materials cost)
* Off to NC Works for our interview dos and don’ts sessions with Bena Weires - always one of our favorites!
*Went to Carteret Community College to learn about welding and get to weld using the Plasma cutters!

That’s a WRAP- !! On our last day, huge thank you to Merianne Gregoricic with Carteret Community College- she came in today to go over the do’s and don’ts of writing a resume! The students saved their work and will be able to add to it in the future!

We would also like to take time to shout out our last 3 business partners!! Healthcare Medical Group is ALWAYS ready to jump in and show students the medical world! We had a student in the MHC office and one at Cedar Point! They saw patients, they shadowed a nurse, they shadowed a CNA, they saw how the front office works! Amazing! Graysan is currently getting her CNA AND was offered a job upon completion!!!

Our second highlight is OWLS Wildlife Rescue! What an amazing organization with a great volunteers! Jade cleaned cages and jumped right in! She held the opossums, saw baby raccoons and even snakes! She loved it and a great experience to see the animal world from a different perspective!

And finally, thank you to Carteret County Sheriffs Office, especially Detective Hawkes! He planned every day with Alaisha and she learned so much about the processes! She spent a day with MCPD last week so she is also able to compare the two agencies! She absolutely loved both!

We have enjoyed these students for the last 8 days and look forward to next year!
