🎉 Celebrating Our New CAPE Interns at Carteret Health Care! 🎉

We are excited to welcome our newest group of CAPE interns to Carteret Health Care for the Fall semester! 🏥💙

These students (Croatan High School, East Carteret High School, and West Carteret High School) are gaining valuable, hands-on experience while exploring careers in healthcare, developing workplace skills, and learning alongside professionals who serve our community every day.

🎉 And we have an incredible milestone to celebrate! 🎉

Since the Summer of 2023, Carteret Health Care has employed 112 CAPE interns!

👏 112 students. 112 opportunities to learn, grow, and explore their future.

We are incredibly grateful for Carteret Health Care’s continued investment in our students and commitment to providing meaningful work-based learning experiences. Partnerships like this help students connect what they learn in the classroom to real careers right here in our community.

🚢 Charting the Course for a Fantastic School Year! 🍎✨

Our East Carteret High School CTE teachers spent time for the past 2 days at the "Charting the Course: Navigating CTE" collaborative with Craven County and Onslow County teachers! They’ve been working hard and getting inspired to bring the absolute best career and technical education opportunities to our students this coming year.

We are so proud of their dedication and can’t wait to see all the incredible things our CTE department will accomplish! 🤩 🎉

We are thrilled to highlight that Duke University Marine Lab is now a proud CAPE Partner with Carteret County Public School System! This partnership allows us to work together to create amazing opportunities for our local students! We have a total of 8 students participating this year, coming from Croatan High School, East Carteret High School, and West Carteret High School🏫🤝

This cohort is about to embark on an unforgettable summer journey split into two incredible roles, spending a minimum of 120 hours doing the following:

Mentoring & Inspiring: For four weeks, our students will step up as leaders, teachers, and mentors to local middle school students from our local public schools, sparking a passion for ocean science in the next generation. 🧑‍🏫📖

Cutting-Edge Research: For the rest of the internship, they’ll dive deep into marine science, working directly on hands-on research projects while being mentored one-on-one by brilliant Duke University Graduate Students! For instance, last year a student discovered a dolphins gender by analyzing its DNA!!🔬🧬

This partnership perfectly bridges the gap between community leadership and high-level scientific exploration. We can't wait to see the incredible waves you all make!

🛠️ From Blueprints to Reality: A Semester in the Shop! 🪚

Our Construction Core, Carpentry 1, and Carpentry 2 students had an incredibly busy and productive second semester! After a first semester focused on safety and theory, students transitioned into hands-on, real-world applications. Here is a look at what they accomplished:

Construction Core: Put their safety credentials to the test, mastering basic joinery, tool proficiency, and minimizing lumber waste to build tools they will use for the rest of their shop classes.

Carpentry 1: Reached major structural milestones! Students learned the "bread and butter" of residential framing by reading blueprints and building actual floor and wall systems—complete with studs, plates, and rough openings for doors and windows. 🏠

Carpentry 2: Tackled advanced finish work and complex roof framing, using technical math to calculate and cut rafters with precision. 📐

Precision Meets Creativity! ✨
It wasn't just heavy framing—students also sharpened their detailed woodworking skills by shifting to smaller, creative projects. They crafted wooden games (like Tic-Tac-Toe and Connect Four), whimsical frog planters with compound angles, and festive wooden Easter bunnies to take home to their families! 🐸🐰

By balancing the rigid discipline of structural carpentry with creative design, these students are developing well-rounded skills to become the ultimate makers. We are so proud of their hard work and teamwork this semester! 🪵💪
