Its a beautiful morning to aerate at Southeast Community College! Aeration is a process that helps remove organic matter and establish a strong root zone in our bentgrass putting greens.

The Southeast Community College Horticulture and Turfgrass Management Program would like to extend a huge congratulations to our students that competed in the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Judging Conference last week in Norfolk, Nebraska! Our team that competed in the Horticulture Competition placed 1st amongst other 2-year colleges from across the United States! We had many other students from our program compete individually and they also did very well!

We would like to congratulate the following individuals for placing first in the Horticulture Team Competition:
- Reese Lierz, Sabetha, Kansas
- Brittany Timoney, Ulysses, NE
- Hannah Schroeter, Humphrey, NE
- Sadie Meyer, Powhattan, KS

Brittany Timoney also placed first amongst all individual test scores during the competition, way to go!

We are very proud of all of our students who competed, and are happy to add this trophy to the trophy case! Great Job!

SCC Agriculture was very successful in many other competitions during this contest. SCC teams also placed 1st in the Knowledge Quiz Bowl and Ag Business Competition, and placed 3rd in Dairy Judging! Hats of to those students as well!

Well it certainly looks like spring is here, atleast for the next two days (we are not liking the projected snow for Saturday). With spring comes the excitement of getting outside, working on the golf course, planting some annuals, or starting your summer landscape project! If all of the above excites you, maybe a career in Horticulture and Turfgrass Management is for you! We are very fortunate to have some very successful past graduates of our program and we would like to share their stories with you. Its time for the next installment of the SCC Horticulture and Turfgrass Alumi Spotlight! If you would like to be featured in one of our future spotlights, please get in contact with us. We would love to hear from you!

--SCC Horticulture and Turfgrass Alumni Spotlight--
I have the privilege to introduce to you Samantha Steward; a 2017 SCC graduate who is currently working as a First Year Landscape Designer with the Nebraska Nusery and Color Gardens in Lincoln, NE, while also obtaining her Bachelors Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It's always a pleasure to speak with Sam and we are so happy that she has found success early in her bright career. We asked her some questions about her experience at SCC and wanted to share her responses with you all!

**Tell us about your current position.**

I am a First Year Landscape Designer with Nebraska Nursery and Color Gardens in Lincoln, NE. I assist my boss with drawing her plans on DynaSCAPES. This includes drawing the base maps, putting the plants, bed lines, hardscapes and other aspects of the landscape. I am located at the retail location and help customers with questions and give ideas. I do free in-store designs for customers, too.

**What attracted you to the SCC Horticulture and Turfgrass Management Program?**

I knew I wanted to go to SCC because it was like a small town. I grew up in a small town and moved to an even smaller town. I liked the sense of community. Two of the instructors in the program made a strong impression on me when I came down and toured the campus. Kevin Christensen and Travis Pralle showed that they cared for their students in more ways than one during my tour.

**How did the SCC Horticulture and Turfgrass Management Program set you up for success in your current position?**

I learned that there are many ways to do things. I was given many opportunities and was able to learn about myself along the way. There were resources that were given to me that would help make me successful at my job. I was showed where to find the answers and the people to talk to, to find the answers.

**What advice would you give current and or perspective students considering a career in Horticulture and Turfgrass Management?**

Take every opportunity given to you. You will learn from every experience you encounter, good and bad. Don’t let failure stand in your way because you are better than failure. The word success should be in your vocabulary and used often to make it a reality.

We would like to thank Sam for taking the time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions for us! If you are looking to start a design project for your home, be sure to check out Nebraska Nusery and Color Gardens in Lincoln, NE; be sure to ask for Sam!!

If you are considering a career in Horticulture and Turfgrass Management, there is still time to register for summer quarter classes.
