Remembering Coach Jamil Merrell
It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of a great friend, coach, mentor, Coach Jamil Merrell. We extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to his family during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.
Coach Jamil was a foundational pillar of Red Lion Christian Football. Having known and worked with him for the past decade, I recognized his tremendous talent and character immediately. The very first thing I noticed about Coach Jamil was the positive impact he had on the youth he coached. He was genuine and real, and we formed an immediate bond.
When I stepped into the role at Red Lion nearly nine years ago, he was my very first call. Coach Jamil had the talent and opportunity to coach anywhere he chose, but he chose us, loyally stating, “I’m going to roll with you, coach.” That unwavering dedication defined who he was. Based on everything I know of this great young man, I will forever know: If you are going to pick one person to go to battle with, Coach Jamil has to be your first choice. I’m sure when we get to heaven, we will have many more great times!
Coach Jamil’s heart, knowledge, and passion will forever be a part of our program. Coach Jamil touched countless lives in a deeply positive way, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest, most inspirational coaches and friends in our program’s history. Even over this past month, he fully poured into our young men—coaching at Penn State, Rutgers, and our 7-on-7 games, ensuring our players were prepared to compete at the highest level. Just a few weeks ago at Rutgers, it was so special to watch Coach Jamil interact with his former coaches, seeing the hugs, smiles and return to the place where he was truly a superstar for the Scarlet Knights from 2009 to 2013.
Coach Jamil’s legacy extends so far. His heart was for others, and his impact on so many will be everlasting and always be remembered.
Yesterday, even in his final moments, Coach Jamil demonstrated bravery and faith. In a text late yesterday, he confirmed his belief in our Lord Jesus, leaving us with a message of peace and love: ”My time here has come, Coach. It’s all love. See you on the other side.”
We take comfort in knowing that we will see him again, and it will be a special time. We also find peace and comfort knowing that Coach Jamil is with the Lord in Heaven now. We lean on the words from 2 Corinthians: “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Take care, my friend, until we see you again. We/I love you! I'm sure the Lord had a greater mission for you, and needed you there.
Special Memorial Reading Today
Yesterday, a personal message was relayed from Coach Jamil to our team, coaches, and alumni. Out of respect for his wishes, we want these words to be shared in person rather than posted online. We will publish his words at a later date, but we want our community to hear them together first. I read his message and they have great life value, life-changing and a great life map to live by. We are honored to read those words from Jamil today.
