This week, we are cozying up to a new holiday favorite and digging our heels into "Happiest Season" on !

Congressional representative for Minnesota's 5th since 2019, Rep. Omar (b. 1982) has also served in MN House of Representatives prior to her move to Congress. The true heroes of 2020 are nurses, medical personnel, and frontline workers. So in this week’s we’d like to feature Cordelia E. Cook, a combat nurse for the U.S. during World War II, who was the first woman in the history of the U.S. Army to receive both a Bronze Star Medal award and a Purple Heart award.
Cook was born in Fort Thomas, Kentucky in 1919. She attended the Christ Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated in 1940. With World War II raging, she became a surgical nurse with the rank of first lieutenant in the United States Army Corps and was sent to Europe. In 1943 the field hospital she was working at was bombed, but Cook fearlessly continued to serve as a nurse into 1944, tending to the wounded at the 11th Field Hospital in the Presenzano sector at the Italian front. For her service she received a Bronze Star Medal award, the first woman to do so. She also became the first woman to receive a Purple Heart award, an award only granted to those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. She had a shrapnel wound from German artillery fire.
After the war she married U.S. Army Captain Harold E. Fillmore and worked as a registered nurse at Doctors Hospital North in Columbus, Ohio for 28 years. Cook passed away in Upper Arlington, Ohio in 1996 at the age of 77.

This week, we're digging our heels into The Queen’s Gambit on !
teammate Kristen Rock says: “The Queen’s Gambit was surprisingly interesting and not at all what I expected. Although it was a slow start for me, I was sucked in by Beth Harmon's journey to become the world's best chess player despite her age, gender, and personal struggles (loss of family, addiction, and a need to succeed). The show is worth checking out because I think her story is one that we [women] can relate to one way or another. One last thought, I had no idea that the underground chess circuit was such a competitive, cut throat scene -- also a good reason to check it out!”

Looking to get involved in local activism here in NEPA? We spoke with a partner from Planned Parenthood Keystone to learn more!
"When I agreed to join the board last May, I never dreamt that we were entering a period when there would be even more challenges to women’s reproductive freedom, including the recent appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court. One of the best ways people can help to support continued access to reproductive health services is by contributing to Planned Parenthood Keystone, the affiliate that delivers services here in NEPA.
In case you aren’t familiar, Planned Parenthood Keystone serves 37 counties in eastern and central Pennsylvania. PPKeystone operates 9 health centers across this 37-county region, including one in Wilkes-Barre. The affiliate was also one of the first to launch telehealth services that have really helped during the pandemic and also allowed people in rural areas to access Planned Parenthood services. In addition, PPKeystone also is now offering PrEP and Pep, which are prophylactic and emergency treatments for HIV exposure.

Erdrich (b. 1954) is a Chippewa writer best known for her Love Medicine series. Considered one of the most influential writers of the Native American Renaissance, Erdrich uses her novels, poetry, and childrens books to explore the similarities and differences between indigenous and european cultures and to celebrate the heritage that she is surrounded by.

For today’s , we have a woman who is probably a household name: Amelia Earhart. Although Earhart set many other records and had numerous other achievements, she is most recognized for being the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Kansas. Growing up she was said to be a tomboy, spending hours outside with her sister hunting rats with a rifle, climbing trees, and collecting bugs and insects. Many consider her “first flight” to be when she flew off of a homemade roller coaster built along her family’s toolshed. She first saw actual aircrafts at the Iowa State Fair in 1907, and was reportedly uninterested and unimpressed.
She fell in love with aviation after visiting an airfield with her father in 1920, stating “I knew I had to fly.” She worked various jobs including stints as a truck driver, a stenographer, and a photographer, to save money for flying lessons. In 1928, after being involved in aviation for years, she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, and (on a different flight) the first woman to fly solo across the Northern American Continent and back. After achieving celebrity status, she promoted aviation, particularly for women in the field and commercial air travel.
Throughout the 1930s she performed numerous other solo flights, setting records for women in aviation in speed and distance. In July 1937, she disappeared and was presumed dead while attempting to fly around the globe.

In today’s art as activism post, we are focusing on Delita Martin. Martin’s studio practice includes printmaking, drawing, mixed media, and installation.
Throughout history, the marginalization of Black women has led to problematic representations of their roles within community and family structures, as well as problematic visual and textual representations; thus making it difficult to document their positive contributions within collective systems. Martin’s current work deals with reconstructing the identity of Black women by piecing together the signs, symbols, and language found in what could be called everyday life from slavery through modern times. Martin’s goal is to create images as a visual language to tell the story of women that have often been marginalized, offering a different perspective of the lives of Black women.
Martin also initiated the Black Box Press Foundation (BBPF). The Black Box Press Foundation mission is to support artists in the production of an exhibition that brings together the creative energy of the arts to move us emotionally with the strategic planning of activism necessary to bring about social change. Social change doesn’t just happen, it materializes because people decide to make a change and take action. BBPF recognizes and honors how artists have had a vital role in political and social history. It aims to continue the rich and varied tradition of artists having an active and leading role in social dialogue.

This week's come from iconic author Maya Angelou!
Best known for her autobiographies, Angelou was incredibly prolific. From poetry to essays, television, and stage, she has arguably so influenced the literary zeitgeist that she has her own cultural gravity! More importantly, she wielded that influence for activism. She was active in the Civil Rights movement and worked directly with first MLK Jr and then Malcolm X.
