Savoring our last two weeks as one group. We discussed where we feel love (the consensus was: our bellies).
We shared the different things we feel shabbat love for in this moment, as we rest and reflect on what we love.
Before that we made art, harvested the first strawberries and transplanted a little bit of the beloved preschool garden into pots to bring home at the end of the school year.

How can we show our family? 2 and 3 year olds and loose parts puzzle it out and then set themselves. Representing oneself is a part of expressing yourself in a community you can come to love. Loose parts play allows for infinite opportunities to build the worlds we come from and the worlds we dream of. Good practice for young ones who will continue developing their languages as they emerge as movers, shakers, and makers in the years to come.

What part of a plant is that you're eating?
Fruit, leaves, stem or root!

In Art & Soil afterschool class for 4-7 year olds, this week we created plant designs and printed each part of the plant using a correlating food that is that plant part. Celery stems, carrot roots, spinach leaves and corn or broccoli "fruits."

This got us thinking not only about where our food comes from but also how we get the seeds to grow that food.

Meanwhile the children found wonder in the many marks a veggie could make, finding beauty in the mundane.

When we finished printing, we tended to our strawberry plants and nibbled on the same veggies we had used to make art (only the non-painty ones)!

What an incredible 10th birthday party, complete with flower potions, a walk around the sun, and vegan chocolate cake.

Here's to the planners and the bakers, the food and beverage providers, the activity leaders, and the movers and shakers that helped us get everything from disco balls in the privy to tote bags for printing.

Cheers to making the day so meaningful. Wonderful memories were not only recorded in the Memory Dump but also made in the moments everyone spent together. Our mutual cherishing of this patch of land, where young people experience community, grow a spirit of inquiry and wonder, and develop their love for the earth, is a strong bond indeed!

Neitze said, "Do not believe any idea that was not born in the open air and of free movement."

So many things can happen when the whole world around us out of doors is available for inspiration.

What can we learn about our little ones from what they do?

How can we use our observations of their play to connect with them and deepen their learning?

I've always been fascinated by play schema: the repetitive behaviors of young children as they interact with and make sense of their world.

Let's work together and play together! We will develop our observations of baby play patterns into responsive provocations that support their amazing

Art & Soil afterschool class began today: Spring time! We sang Inch by Inch (The Garden Song) and explored the ingredients of "fertile ground," by taking soil samples with an auger, and then using them for sensory play. We also worked with components of soil (sand, clay and compost) to mix our own fertile ground for strawberry plants. The children will tend the plants in the weeks ahead each time they return to this little pocket of land here in the city of Beacon. Returning to a garden in itself is a way to belong to the earth, because you grow familiar and connected to a place that both feeds you and needs you.
