In loving memory of Charita Buchanan, we are honored to announce the renaming of the Exemplary Educator Award to the Buchanan Exemplary Educator Award.

Charita was a Co-Founder of BCDI Ohio, former Board Member, and Membership Chair whose dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to children, families, educators, and the community left a lasting legacy.
Beginning in 2026, the Buchanan Exemplary Educator Award will carry her name forward by recognizing an outstanding educator who demonstrates the excellence, passion, service, and commitment that Charita so deeply embodied. Through this award, we celebrate her life, honor her contributions, and ensure that her legacy continues to inspire generations of educators and advocates.

Nominations for the 2026 Buchanan Exemplary Educator Award will open soon. Stay tuned for more information as we honor Charita’s legacy by celebrating educators who continue the important work she championed.

We are deeply grateful to Elyria Charities for awarding us a grant to continue our Stories That Shape Us: Early Learning, Literacy, and Family Advocacy Initiative.

Their generous support helps us promote early literacy, empower families, and connect children with culturally affirming books, educational resources, and meaningful community support. 📢 Your voice matters when it comes to Head Start!

The federal government has proposed major changes to the Head Start Program Performance Standards that could impact children, families, educators, and Head Start programs.

These changes are proposed, not final, which means there is still time to speak up. Families, educators, Head Start staff, advocates, and community members can submit public comments and share how these proposed changes could affect children and families.
