The Mandel Jewish Day School is an independent, coeducational day school that fosters academic excellence and character development by fusing superior general studies with dynamic Jewish learning to create a strong intellectual and ethical base. As Cleveland’s only community Jewish day school, the Mandel Jewish Day School (JDS) enrolls students from all Jewish denominations, practices, and degrees of observance. Founded in 1969, Mandel JDS enrolls more than 350 students (18 mos. – 8th grade).

A strong school year starts before the first day of school. ❤️

Our teachers spend the week in an intensive orientation filled with professional development, security training, conversations about Judaism and Israel, collaboration, and thoughtful preparation for the year ahead.

So much time, energy, and care goes into making sure our teachers are ready to give our students their very best.

We cannot wait for an incredible year!

Mazal tov to our very own Toby Lausin, ESL Program Coordinator, for being named one of Cleveland Jewish News’ “12 Under 36”!

Toby has completely reimagined our ELL program, implementing best-practice structures that strengthen language development while helping new students acclimate and thrive. She brings a deep well of knowledge, a passion for teaching, and an unwavering commitment to our students. We are so fortunate to have her on our team. Mazal tov Toby!

The end of the school year at Mandel JDS closes out with some amazing experiential learning. Our middle schoolers have been traveling: 6th grade to Firelands Scout Reservation, 7th grade to Washington, DC and 8th grade to California. We can only post 20 of the same pics on FB and Insta at a time. Wish we could do more…looks like some unforgettable adventures!

Last week, our Kindergarten through 5th grade students proudly shared their learning at our annual Celebration of Learning, showcasing the culmination of months of inquiry, discovery, and hands-on exploration through their Integrated Project-Based Learning (IPBL) units.

Throughout the day, students presented projects centered around meaningful questions that challenged them to think critically, collaborate with classmates, and connect their learning to the world around them:

👂 Kindergarten: How do we use our senses to understand the world? How do people who are deaf or blind experience and navigate their surroundings?

🧸 1st Grade: How do toys and games influence the way we learn, grow, and connect with others?

🐾 2nd Grade: Why do different animals live in different habitats?

💼 3rd Grade: What can mission-driven businesses teach us about making a difference?

🥦 4th Grade: How do our food choices affect our health, communities, and environment?

👗 5th Grade: How can fashion and clothing be used as a force for positive change?

From research and problem-solving to creativity and communication, our students demonstrated the skills that prepare them for success both in and beyond the classroom. Most importantly, they showed what happens when learning is driven by curiosity, purpose, and student voice.

We are so proud of the thoughtful work, dedication, and growth on display throughout the evening. Congratulations to all of our students and teachers on an inspiring Celebration of Learning!

Mazal Tov to Karen Shiffman on her retirement after an incredible 36 years at Agnon and Mandel JDS!

For more than three decades, Karen has touched the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues with her dedication, warmth, and commitment to our community. Her impact can be seen in the generations of learners she has helped guide, support, and inspire.

We are deeply grateful for all that Karen has given to our school and wish her happiness, health, and fulfillment in this exciting new chapter.

8th grader Yali Lazarovitz opened the Mandel JDS 57th Annual Meeting with a moving d’var Torah reflecting on the deep connection he has discovered between Israel and the Diaspora since moving to Cleveland two years ago.

We also celebrated 5th Grade Teacher Angela Kalina, recipient of the Michele Sudow Young Teacher Award, recognizing her exceptional impact just two years into her teaching career.

Alumni Jake and Maggie Abrams honored their grandmother, Gloria Abrams, by speaking about the core values that inspire the Gloria Abrams Volunteer of the Year Awards. This year’s honorees included Roberta Kaplan as Grandparent Volunteer of the Year, and Karen Shulman and David Druce as Parent Volunteers of the Year.
Mandel JDS staff members were also recognized for milestone years of service. Director of Human Resources Jodi Stewart was celebrated for 20 years of dedication to our community. Karil Bialostosky (not pictured), Seth Guren, Jill Leyser, Julie Pilloff, Sari Schneider (not pictured), and Barb Taub were each recognized for 10 years of service.

Our community also shared a truly special moment honoring Karen Shiffman for her remarkable 36 years of teaching at Mandel. Karen reflected on the many changes she has witnessed and helped shape over the past three decades. She also shared her hopes for our future rooted in Jewish values that cherish childhood, celebrate diversity, and commit to a practice of perseverance and compassion.
We are deeply grateful for Karen’s extraordinary dedication to our students and community over 36 years, double chai! We wish her much joy and fulfillment in her retirement and next adventures. Todah rabah and mazel tov, Karen!
