Today Mandel JDS Middle School remembers and reflects on October 7th, 2023.

We remember. We do not forget. We choose life. 💙
זוכרים. לא שוכחים. בוחרים בחיים.

Mandel JDS students learn by doing. 6th graders conducted chemistry experiments in science class to better understand the Law of Conservation of Matter. A chemical reaction was achieved by mixing hydrogen peroxide and dish soap with yeast, bloomed in warm water. The yeast is a catalyst causing the formation of thick, expanding foam. The experiment was part of the 6th grade unit on atoms and matter, focusing on the rearrangement of atoms from one substance into other substances, in this case, hydrogen peroxide ( 2H₂O₂ ) breaking down into water and oxygen gas ( 2H₂O+O₂ ).

We are saddened to share the loss of Aliki Rzepka z”l, Honorary Life Board Member and beloved founder and friend of Agnon/Mandel JDS. Alongside her husband, Peter, Aliki played a foundational role in establishing the Agnon School in 1969, creating a Jewish educational community for their daughter, Lisa, and ultimately helping shape a school that would impact generations of students and families.

Aliki remained deeply connected to the school throughout the decades as a parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, great-aunt and devoted supporter. Her love of Jewish education, philanthropy, community and learning is woven into the fabric of Agnon/Mandel JDS, and her legacy will continue to live on through the generations she helped inspire.

Our thoughts are with the entire Rzepka family during this difficult time. May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, and may Aliki's memory be for a blessing.

Celebrate the life of Aliki Rzepka, leave a kind word or memory and get funeral service information care of Berkowitz-Kumin-Bookatz Memorial Chapel.

At Mandel JDS, our K-8 students and staff are divided into Shvatim, or tribes, inspired by the 12 Tribes of Jacob. Everyone looks forward to this special time to connect with students and staff from different grades and divisions, and to build new relationships across Mandel JDS. Siblings and cousins are placed in the same tribe, which makes Shvatim a special way to bring families together within our school community.

This week, our tribes made decorations for the sukkah!

Special shoutout to Reuben, which has an incredible 9 family members among its tribe! 💜

12 Shvatim. One community. One Mandel JDS. 🦁
