CONTROL Valves

A control valve is a final control element that regulates the flow of a fluid by changing the size of the flow passage in response to a controller signal.

Flow Coefficient (Cv)

Cv indicates the flow capacity of a valve.

It is defined as the number of US gallons of water per minute that will flow through the valve with a pressure drop of 1 psi at specified conditions.

For liquids:

Q = Cv √(ΔP / SG)

Where:
Q = Flow rate in US gpm
Cv = Valve flow coefficient
ΔP = Pressure drop across the valve in psi
SG = Specific gravity of the liquid

Key Control Valve Terms

Valve Body:
Contains the flow passage and withstands the process pressure.

Actuator:
Provides the force needed to move the valve stem or shaft.

Positioner:
Adjusts actuator pressure so the valve reaches the position demanded by the control signal.

Trim:
The internal flow-controlling parts of the valve, such as the plug, seat, stem and cage.

Valve Travel:
Movement of the valve from fully closed to fully open, usually expressed as 0–100%.

Rangeability:
The ratio between the maximum and minimum controllable flow rates.

Fail-Open (FO):
The valve moves open when actuating energy is lost.

Fail-Close (FC):
The valve moves closed when actuating energy is lost.

Fail-in-Place (FIP):
The valve is designed to remain near its last position when actuating energy is lost.

Flow Characteristics

Linear:
Equal increments of valve travel produce approximately equal changes in Cv.

Equal Percentage:
Equal increments of valve travel produce equal percentage changes in Cv. Common in process control.

Quick Opening:
A large increase in flow capacity occurs during the initial part of valve travel. Commonly used for on/off and special applications.

Good control valve selection considers Cv, pressure drop, process conditions, flow characteristic, rangeability, actuator sizing, shutoff requirements, cavitation, flashing, noise and the required fail position.
