Permaculture Design Course
Summer 2014
We hope you will leave the course saturated with a new way of knowing that will empower you to co-create a permaculture. In this ten-day workshop we will delve deeply into the system of permaculture design. We will begin by exploring a new way of knowing that is holistic and biological. One way to describe permaculture is land-use design
based in systems thinking. Thinking in systems is basically the opposite of how we are trained to think, and how we think becomes so deeply ingrained that most of us don’t ever realize there are alternative ways of knowing. Limits to the dominant way of knowing in our culture, reductionism, are becoming increasingly evident as human and ecological systems continue to degrade. Thinking in systems is the foundation upon which regenerative, ecological, and social solutions can be implemented. We will relate this new way of knowing to agriculture, evolution, ecology, natural history, water, social organization, natural building, epistemology and more to come up with a pattern language for a regenerative culture. A permaculture way of knowing cannot be built on top of our current unsustainable way of knowing. Simple linear accumulation of knowledge is not sufficient. Radical reorganization of life-ways is necessary if we are going to create a regenerative culture—a permaculture. We must step back, question our assumptions, and ground ourselves in a paradigm of sanity and empowerment. Join us for this 10 day immersion course in a permaculture inspired land-based community. You will learn from a functioning permaculture site as well as several regional practicing Permaculturists. The lectures and discussions will be bolstered by daily hands-on activities. Three local organic meals daily, on site camping, and materials will be included. This certificate granting design course is intended for hands on practitioners and is priced to be affordable to all. When: -Friday July 11th-Sunday July 20th
Where: -Bayfield Peninsula, WI. Pricing: -Honor-system sliding-scale $450-$900. Contact: -Nathaniel Larson 715-779-0155

A Case for Permaculture…
Permaculture began as a model for abundant produce created by small scale endeavors for markets and home-use as a response for the need to reduce transportation miles of food and other material resources to manage carbon emissions. To this end, and as it also addresses the toxic systems of production and distribution, Permaculture is the best working model for how to localize food systems, as well as for providing all other human needs such as fuel, fiber, farmaceuticals, fun and more. Not only does Permaculture as a system focus on reduced inputs, it also emphasizes the nature that we must regenerate diverse resilient and stable communities to exist into the future. Specifically, for those who attempt to create sustainability in their world, few other sectors have offered as rational and organized of a system for empowering the designer/creator to take on the task of building sustainable communities competently on small scale efforts. Train yourself in Permaculture, and a transformative experience in self empowerment is yours!
