When you participate in combative arts on a regular basis, the range of situations that trigger anxiety grows smaller with every class. It’s so much easier to manage emotions in dangerous situations when you have already defended yourself hundreds of times. You’re also more situationally aware. You will recognize early that situations are leaning opportunities: to be approached with curiosity, not fear.

For many of these young martial artists, this is the most difficult thing they do. They do it, though. They face adversity willingly. They face their fear on these mats, and they win something better than a medal. They win the knowledge that they can handle it. They win confidence. They win major xp.
