What you need to know about the Baxter Bike Bus:
1 | We have awesome adults riding along to help keep kids safe, but the more parents the better! A couple adults carry stop signs to draw attention and stop cars at street crossings. Police Chief Comer drives with us to keep an eye out and stop traffic for us on Military Avenue and 12th Street to ensure safety.
2 | You are ultimately responsible for your child and their bike regardless of if you ride with us. So please have your child wear a helmet for their safety and don't forget to pick up their bike from the school!
3 | You can join anywhere along the route! Start at Derfelt Funeral Homes (328 E 12th St) to ride the entire route, or just wait for the Bike Bus ride near you and join along.
4 | If you have a Lincoln rider who is in training wheels or can ride their bike but not yet proficiently (starting, turning, and stopping confidently and comfortably), then use your discretion for their and all the kids safety, and start at the USD 508 Bus Barn behind Central Elementary. We try to be there around 7.30/35, but that depends on how the ride goes that morning!
5 | We are having a ton of fun. We will be blearing music, laughing, and enjoying the weather. Accidents happen when you put 25-60 kids riding bikes in close proximity, but we dust ourselves off, encourage each other, and keep riding. Again - so please wear helmets!
6 | This is on Friday mornings during school. We will take a break in the winter as it gets dark and cold in the mornings. And we won't ride on mornings with rain and storms, so keep an eye on this page for whether we are riding or not.
7 | Why do we do this?
- Because its a ton of fun.
- Because its a great way to start everyone's day.
- In an isolated world, this gets kids together.
- In a stagnant world, this gets kids moving.
- In a screen-addicted world, this gets kids outside.
