Battle Ground Education Association makes pair of $5,000 donations

The Battle Ground Education Association has made two $5,000 donations that will benefit Battle Ground School District families and the greater community. The organization, which comprises certificated employees of Battle Ground Public Schools, donated $5,000 each to the district's Family and Community Resource Center (FCRC) and the North County Community Food Bank.

“We appreciate the level of support the community has shown us, and we want to do what we can to give back in this difficult time,” said BGEA president Fiona Engrebretson. “Lydia and the rest of the staff at the FCRC do such a fantastic job, and they, along with the North County Community Food Bank, provide an invaluable community resource.”

The BGEA usually sponsors an annual donation drive for food, toiletries, and other personal care items to benefit the FCRC, but were unable to do so this year because of COVID-19. In lieu of the donation drive, Engebretson and the BGEA membership decided to make a monetary donation with the goal of directly supporting the local community.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Battle Ground Education Association, because this donation represents teachers’ appreciation and value of what the FCRC does to support the students in their classrooms,” said FCRC coordinator Lydia Sanders. “This generous donation will go a long way in helping to break the cycle of poverty and ensure that every student in BGPS can receive the help and guidance they need in order to focus on learning.”

“We are all in this together, and the BGEA is glad to be in a position to give back to the community in a way that directly benefits our students and families,” Engebretson said.

Applications for BGEA and Axel Forsman Scholarships from BGEA ~ due May 31st

Please pass on these Scholarship opportunities to your students, families, teachers, and staff.

The Scholarship Application deadline is May 31st. All applications are digital this year.



The BGEA is offering scholarships of $1,500 to Battle Ground Education Association members’ children who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and involvement in school/community activities.

These scholarships will be granted to students pursuing a post-high school degree or certificate in a two-or-four-year institution.

Priority will be given to graduating seniors, but currently enrolled college students will also be considered. This is a non-renewable scholarship.

The applicants may be living in and/or attending school in a district other than a Battle Ground Public School District, if the parent is a BGEA member, current or retired.

In honor of Axel Forsman (a former Battle Ground Public Schools Librarian), the Battle Ground Education Association is offering scholarships of $1000 for graduates who exhibit exceptional service to home, school, and community. This is a non-renewable scholarship.

The applicant must be a 2020 graduate of a Battle Ground Public Schools (BGPS) High School.

These scholarships will be granted to students pursuing a post-high school degree or certificate in a two-or-four-year institution.

The Washington Education Association’s Special Education Support Center (SESC) and Inclusionary Practices Project (IPP) are offering courses online, in real-time, via Zoom.

Our schedule of courses (with the registration link) for the week of 4/20/2020 is attached. Registration is open. Clock hours will be provided. Courses are free. The first 500 registrants will receive a confirmation with the Zoom link. Save the confirmation email to access the course! Since courses are provided in real-time, live and include small group discussions and opportunities for engagement, course capacity is limited to 500 registrants. We are unable to offer a waitlist.

I saw this post today. It made me thankful for the Solid Union Voice we have in the BGEA.
This might be a good conversation starter with those in your building about why Union membership matters and how we are only Strong because we are UNITED together.

The new Washington College Grant (formerly the State Need Grant) offers more money to more students than ever before.
