Battle Creek Youth Orchestra The Battle Creek Youth Orchestra has both youth and adult ensembles, helping spread the joy of frien Ms.

The mission of the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra is to provide excellent music education opportunities for youth in and beyond the greater Calhoun County area through ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, coaching, and performance opportunities. In an atmosphere that promotes learning, respect and friendship, BCYO nurtures each student as a unique individual. The Battle Creek Youth Orchestra was founded

in 1966 by the Morning Musical Club of Battle Creek. The first Youth Orchestra of 46 students from Battle Creek, Lakeview, Harper Creek, Springfield, Kellogg Community College, Coldwater and Gull Lake schools presented its first concert in November of that year. As the student music educational need in the community arose, the organization added the ensembles of Junior Strings (1985), Intermediate Strings (Reading Ensemble, 1988), Beginning Strings and Junior Winds (1999), Junior Youth Orchestra (2001) and Music Connections (2009). During its history, BCYO conductors have been distinguished musicians and dedicated teachers. The current director of the Youth Orchestra is Eliot Gitelman, director of orchestras for Sturgis Public Schools and instructor at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. The director for the junior ensembles and Junior Youth Orchestra is Alice Hammond. Hammond is a former band and orchestra teacher for Vicksburg School District.

Helen Hammond will be sadly missed by all who knew her:

Helen Mae (Peters) Hammond of Springdale Ark., formerly of Battle Creek, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at the age of 98.

She was born June 10, 1921, to Elmer and Albena Peters in Cuba, Kansas, and graduated from Belleville High School and the University of Kansas. She married C.T. Hammond in Flagstaff, Arizona, On September 27, 1942. They moved to Battle Creek after WWII. She was active at the Church of the Resurrection, Morning Musical Club and the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra.

She survives by her daughters: Alice Hammond (Ron Alagia) of Athens, Michigan; Jeanne Rupert of Springdale, Arkansas; sons: Tom Hammond (Sondra) of Orient, Ohio; and Dr. Richard Hammond (Linda) of Twin Falls, Idaho; grandchildren: Allison McCarthy (Perry), Alex Hammond (Morgan), and Avery Boysen (Zach); great-grandchild: JP McCarthy.

Her remains have been cremated and interred with her husband's ashes at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial services are to be held at a later date. Friends who wish may make a memorial contribution to the organization of their choice.

Ensembles of the Battle Creek Youth Orchestra will be performing this Sunday, March 20, 2:00-3:00 pm at the Art Center of Battle Creek. The performance will be an excellent way to present the music abilities of area students with the visually artistic side of students from throughout the area on display for the Class Act exhibit. Participating ensembles from the BCYO are: Beginning Strings class, Youth Orchestra quartet and Music Connections String Ensemble. Musical selection range from the fiddle tune Old Joe Clark to Mozart. It's going to be a great event and we hope to see you there!
