The Wilberforce University Choir is the premier choral ensemble of Wilberforce University, one of the oldest historically Black universities in the United States. Rooted in a rich musical tradition that dates back to the late 19th century, the choir carries forward a legacy of powerful vocal artistry and community engagement. Its early predecessor, the Wilberforce Concert Company, toured nationally in the 1880s, helping to establish the university’s musical prominence. 

Over generations, the choir has become known for its captivating performances that blend spirituals, classical works, gospel, and contemporary repertoire, reflecting both the cultural heritage and evolving artistic vision of the university. Under the leadership of Dr. Justen V. Seay, Sr., the ensemble has been revitalized with ambitious programming, including collaborations with symphony orchestras and national tours. A recent highlight includes the choir’s selection to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2026—an extraordinary milestone that showcases its exceptional talent on a world stage. 

Beyond performance, the Wilberforce University Choir fosters vocal excellence, community outreach, and artistic growth, continuing to inspire audiences and nurture the next generation of musicians with a powerful blend of tradition and innovation.

21ST ANNUAL HBCU CONCERT
The Historically Black Colleges & Universities Choir Committee of Second’s New Vision Outreach Ministries and collaborating churches are planning
their 21st Annual Historically Black College Concert Choir Spring concert.

The Hampton University Concert Choir, of Hampton, Virginia will present a concert on Sunday, March 9, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church, 145 Capital Avenue Northeast. Each year during spring break, various Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Choirs tour the nation with twofold objectives; one goal is to expose and enlighten the public to the musical talents,
culture, and traditions of HBCU life and to solicit funding for the choir program and the second goal is to recruit students to attend a HBCU school, of which there are over 100 schools in the nation.

The 42-member choir, under the direction of
Omar J. Dickinson, is excited and delighted to share their talent with Battle Creek and surrounding communities. The committee invites everyone to come out and experience the melodies that will flow the air, tug at your heart, and transport you
to another dimension. The concert is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be collected.
