Where was Mr. LeBlanc all week? Why did he miss the first two rehearsals? Why did he drag his family along?

Because I had to be with my people!

I found my people in places that pushed me far beyond what I thought I was capable of. The Phantom Regiment did that for me.

The adults leading the Phantom Regiment expected a lot from me when I was 18. They demanded that I work, improve, and meet a standard that at times I was not sure I could meet. But I did.

This week I was able to experience that again by performing with the Phantom Regiment Alumni Corps.

They again demanded our best. They held us to a high standard. And when we got tired, they still expected us to meet that standard.

That is what I hope every students finds as members of the Bruin Band.

A place where they belong.
A place where they are needed.
A place where their presence matters.
A place that pushes them.
A place where people expect more from them than they may expect from themselves.

Every year, I get to watch students begin to find that place in our band.

And all these years later, I am reminded that I found mine too.
