She has a border collie named Oney, an APHA gelding named Skip, and an AQHA gelding named Earl
A fun fact about Anne is that she has been riding horses for 20 years!

Attention horse owners and horse lovers!! Come check out Equi Day 2023 hosted by LSU SVM Equine Club Saturday, October 7th, from 8 am to 4 pm, for a fun-filled and informative day!

A variety of lectures and demonstrations will be available for horse owners and horse lovers alike to become more informed on subjects such as emergencies, gastric ulcers, bandaging techniques, and more. Breakfast, lunch, and goodie bags will be provided with registration, as well as a Free Equi Day t-shirt for all pre-registrants!

Registration ends September 1st at 10pm. Contact Anne Patout and Mariah Alexander if you have any questions! We look forward to seeing you there!

Congratulations to 3rd year LSU SCAAEP member, Rhett Sonnier!!

Clear Creek Stud to Award $5,000 Scholarship on Fair Grounds Closing Day

On Fair Grounds Racetrack closing day, Sunday, March 28, one well qualified student will be awarded The Annual Clear Creek Stud Scholarship. This is an award that Clear Creek Stud sponsors in the name of their clients for a student with Louisiana based connections to the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Breeding and Racing Industry.

Applications were submitted to and accepted by the Louisiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. A committee reviewed all applicants, then made the difficult decision, based on their evaluation of need and merit, regarding who would receive the $5,000 scholarship. This year there were many highly qualified applicants. After much deliberation, the decision was made to award the scholarship to Rhett Sonnier.

The son of Shannon and Karen Sonnier, Rhett is currently in his third year at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. His family has been involved in the horse industry in Louisiana for generations, breeding, training and racing Quarter Horses, and includes notable jockey Randy Romero who passed away in 2019. Rhett was Valedictorian of his class at Erath High School and has participated in numerous extracurricular activities throughout his life. His goal is to practice Veterinary Medicine in Louisiana with an emphasis on equines both at the race track and the breeding farms.
With an eye toward the future of our industry, Clear Creek Stud intends to make this Scholarship Donation on an annual basis, and would like to thank all who submitted an entry.

“It is our intention to assist families who are actively invested in the Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Breeding and Racing Industries in Louisiana," says Val C. Murrell, Clear Creek Stud General Manager. "We hope to help students looking for careers in these industries or support industries, and to encourage young talent to stay in Louisiana. Our youth are the future of our industry.”

What better excuse for therapeutic coloring? It’s basically studying.

COLOR ME!

Lameness is a term used to describe a horse’s change in gait, usually in response to pain somewhere in a limb, but also possibly as a result of a mechanical restriction on movement. You may have guessed what comes next — lameness arising in the front feet accounts for most soundness issues in horses, and it continues to frustrate owners and veterinarians alike since the beginning of time!

While lameness cannot always be prevented, it can be minimized through your understanding of the factors involved in its development. For example, the more you understand about basic horse anatomy, the more problems you may be able to identify early on — and the better information you will be able to provide your veterinarian.
