This Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re recognizing Tosha James of Helix Mentorship & Maritime Academy for the dedication, professionalism, and excellence she brings to her classroom every day. Through engaging instruction and meaningful relationships with her students, she continues to create an environment where scholars are encouraged to grow, achieve, and succeed.

She was nominated for recognition by her principal, who stated:
“I proudly nominate Ms. Tosha James for Teacher of the Year for her unwavering commitment to student growth and excellence in the classroom. She consistently creates engaging, standards-aligned lessons that challenge students while providing the support they need to succeed. Ms. James builds strong relationships with her students, fostering a culture of accountability, confidence, and achievement. Her dedication, professionalism, and impact on student outcomes make her truly deserving of this recognition.”

His student-centered approach and commitment to excellence continue to make a positive impact both inside and outside of the classroom.

He was nominated for recognition by his principal, who shared:
“I am nominating this teacher because he consistently takes initiative and demonstrates strong leadership within our school community. He is highly innovative in his approach to instruction and always prioritizes student-centered learning to ensure all students are successful. Additionally, he is a true team player, collaborating with colleagues and contributing to a positive and productive school culture.”

Helix Mentorship & Maritime Academy Freshman Academy is PROUD! A group of our ninth graders stepped up and accepted Ms. Wright’s ACT Challenge—and they delivered!

🎉 Shoutout to Kaydence Victorin and Jordyn Rice for earning an ACT score of 19 as 9th graders!

We are incredibly proud of our freshmen and can’t wait to see where their journey takes them.

Helix Community Schools honors the life and legacy of Dr. James Llorens who passed away on April 21, 2026. Dr. Llorens served as the founding president of Cristo Rey High School in Baton Rouge which changed its name to Franciscan High School. In 2023, Franciscan became a part of the Helix family when Helix acquired the school.

“Dr. Llorens was a friend who I admired deeply,” said Helix President and CEO Preston Castille. “He gave so much to this world and was loved by so many. His life of service has left a permanent mark on humanity. He will be greatly missed.”

Dr. Llorens dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge. He influenced countless lives through his leadership, commitment to excellence and his genuine care and concern for others. We are grateful for his dedication and unwavering commitment to educating all students. His contributions to our community will continue to inspire and impact the next generation for years to come.

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, colleagues and all who knew him.
