The LSU College of Art & Design announces the launch of the new Steele Scholars Program, a scholarship to support LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture students funded generously by LSU landscape architecture alumnus Johnny Steele.

The Steele Scholars Program provides one $50,000 award each year to support a fourth-year student in the LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture who is preparing for a spring semester internship of significant professional value. One student will be selected annually, starting 2026.

“This kind of generosity truly changes lives,” said Arne Flaten, Dean of the College of Art & Design. “The Johnny Steele scholarship will support LSU landscape architecture students in pursuit of their dream careers, and further cement the program among the best in the country.”

Louisiana State University has named Kurt Culbertson, FASLA, FAICP, FCELA, an internationally recognized landscape architect, planner, educator, and LSU alumnus, as the new director of the LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture.

The spring 2026 LSU College of Art & Design commencement ceremony will take place Friday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in the LSU Maddox Field House.

The Commencement Speaker is Scott Ballard, the owner of Ballard Brands, LLC, and member of the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Meet LSU College of Art & Design Commencement Student Speaker Sophie Webber, who graduates with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture.

"It is so hard to pick a favorite LSU memory, but I have to say it was either my planting design class held at Hilltop Arboretum or the landscape architecture spring break trips I attended to Brazil, Germany, and France!"

After graduation, she will be traveling to Europe to study outdoor learning facilities in early elementary settings through the Bill Millsaps Fellowship.

The College of Art & Design commencement ceremony is Friday, May 15 at 4 p.m. in the LSU Maddox Field House. Please note it is a clear bag policy and plan to arrive early.
