African-African American Studies at LSU

Join us for our second lecture this month with Dr. Solimar Otero.

Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald collaborated on one of the most successful efforts to address the lack of educational opportunities for poor southern African Americans. They created the Rosenwald Fund, which provided architectural plans and start-up funds for one or two room schools. Communities had to implement the plans, raise additional funds, hire schoolteachers and make sure students filled the seats. From 1917 to 1932 the Rosenwald Fund helped construct over 5,300 schools in 15 states across the rural South.

Photo: Artifacts from the Hope School, a two-room school in Pomaria, South Carolina. The school operated from 1925 until 1954 when it closed as a result of school desegregation and consolidation efforts. In 2009, it reopened as a community center.

On this day in history, Carol Moseley Braun became the first African-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992.

Students can still volunteer for LSU 6th Annual Preview Day for Males of Color. Preview Day is an event that we host for 7th- 9th grade men of color in Baton Rouge as well as Lafeyette, New Orleans and other surrounding cities. We expose the young men to campus support, academic resources, and the admission process. The students leave with new relationships and information about being future Tigers!
