LATM and LSTA have exciting ideas for the upcoming 2026 joint conference. "🔢✨ Patterns that GROW - literally! ✨🔢

In this Grades 3–5 Illuminations lesson, students dive into growing patterns by exploring how shapes and numbers change step by step. Starting with a counting book like Ten Black Dots, students investigate a ""count on by 1"" pattern, then move into an L-shaped growing pattern, discovering that each new figure adds two dots, revealing the pattern of odd numbers hiding in plain sight! 👀

Students wrap up by extending a triangle growing pattern on their own, describing the rule, and writing a number pattern to match. It's a hands-on way to build early algebraic thinking by helping students notice, extend, and justify patterns - a skill that grows with them all the way through higher math! 📈

🧠 Objectives:
✅ Extend growing patterns
✅ Describe growing patterns
✅ Analyze how growing patterns are created

Ready to help your students see the math in the world around them?

The latest results from the OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) offer a new look at how well 15-year-olds are prepared to thrive in an increasingly complex world. Drawing on results from more than 760,000 students across 91 countries and economies, PISA 2025 examines performance in science, reading, mathematics, and computational problem solving, alongside new insights into students’ use of AI for schoolwork and mindsets such as curiosity, perseverance, and learner agency. https://ncee.zoom.us/webinar/register/7017879290261/WN_uD91FgTwQhKBJbuVj4RAVQ #/registration

Explore and the effect they have on regression curves and residuals.

As you experiment with different values, how is the slope changed? What values do not impact the slope as drastically? What generalizations can you make about outliers?
