Today I taught my Fair Fit dress to the first 6 students to make it. I was so scared, as it's been about 6 years of work and research in the making. I'm so grateful to my first students for taking the plunge and tackling fit while making a conceptual dress. Couldn't do it without you guys! to name a few πŸ˜˜πŸ™Œ

Is it Still Important to Teach Children to Sew? 02/06/2017

I have seen children learn patience, problem solving, and how to analyze a project while thinking three dimensionally as they learn how to sew. It's a life skill that we all can use to Improve our lives and grow creatively.

Is it Still Important to Teach Children to Sew? "I think the disconnection [to sewing] comes from schools. They don’t have life-learning events in schools anymore...."

What does "Fair Fit" Really Mean? 01/12/2017

What does "Fair Fit" Really Mean? When I created the name for my sewing studio, I meant for β€œFair Fit” to house many examples of fair fashion, beyond the β€œfit” of clothing. Please read along, in this 6 part series I’ll discuss how in my professional experience I found fairness and became more empowered with clothing, fit, and workin...

So many quilts, so many beautiful quilts!! I grew up in an arts and crafts heaven, Winterset Iowa, home to amazing craftspersons and quilters whose work at the Covered Bridge Festival inspired me to make things as a child. Now they have an Iowa Quilt Museum, right on the town square! And it's full of amazing quilts that date back to 1870 to the present. Needless to say, I'm enjoying my visit home immensely 😍 if you are ever driving through Iowa on interstate I 35 or I 80, this place is a must see!

Day 18- Power Up! Here's a preview of a collaboration with my husband . He sews too- and just got his very own industrial walking foot machine. We are designing a bag out of leather, vintage military straps, and one of his graffiti paintings. Here's a video of the process - pics of the final bag to come!

Found this beauty today at the Goodwood Progressive Yard Sale this morning πŸ˜ŠπŸŽ‰ Just checked it out, it has all parts and it mechanically in check- just needs some tuning and it's good to sew. I've wanted one of these forever!

Day 4: Fun! Which is every day spent with Stitches and her antics in the studio. Her main gig is sitting on what we all are working on and being adorable ❀️😻❀️

Day 3- Up Close This spring I made a tiny collection of OOAK Fair Fit garments pieced from the hand dyed and self sewn pants I made for my husband He outwore the pants and since they were special they got reworked into patchwork dresses.

Day 2 Wacky Pattern This year I have been so focused on learning very specific sewing skills when pausing I miss the wacky 😍 I look at this dress I made 2012, and remember how I was always testing how far I could fragment a pattern- it was so much fun. I tend to lean to the random over refinement. My intention with these garments was not focused on what their purpose was in everyday life, they were made for storytelling a show and were dramatized accordingly.

Happy ! I'm Andrea, I love sewing and cracking up my students in my classes. Laughing eases the perfectionist tendencies that always show up with sewing. I run Fair Fit Studio in Baton Rouge and teach beginners how to sew their own clothes. I'm grateful I get to share my love of sewing with others and my passion is making crazy clothing collages from pattern fragments with cloth, repurposed clothing, and dye πŸ’œπŸ’•πŸ’™β£οΈ
