Faculty spotlight! WGSS is going abroad this summer. Dr. Sarah Becker, Director of the Center for Community Engagement, will be teaching two WGSS courses to our student athletes as part of a special cultural immersion trip to Croatia and Greece. Under her tutelage, these students will get an interdisciplinary perspective on the history of the places they're visiting. Thank you, Dr. Becker, for helping to facilitate this wonderful learning experience.

On Thursday night, Dr. Penelope Deutscher gave a deeply engaging lecture on the power dynamics at play regarding the topic of abortion. For those looking to learn more about the interplay of poltics, gender, and the concept of reproductive futurism, make sure to consult Dr. Deutscher's works. A big thank you to Dr. Deborah Goldgaber of the Philosophy Department for helping to bring Dr. Deutscher to LSU all the way from Northwestern as a keynote speaker for the French and Francophone Philosophy Today conference.

The Black Femicide Awareness Panel at LSU was a powerful event that shed light on the socialization, victimization, and possible criminalization of Black women victims of sexual and domestic violence. Moderated by our star LSU students, Sy'rai Adams and Claudia Bell, this panel aimed to raise awareness and honor the memory of Ashlei Hinds, an LSU student who tragically lost her life to femicide.

The panelists included esteemed scholars and seasoned advocates, such as Patti Freeman, Executive Director of the Iris Domestic Violence Center, Dr. Kreslyn Kelley-Ellis, Director of the Lighthouse Program, Dr. Miranda Brown, Deputy Coordinator of the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, and Annie Sheehan-Dean, Ogden Honors College Upper Division Distinction Recipient. This diverse group of speakers provided valuable insights and perspectives on the issues faced by Black women experiencing violence.

The event was made possible under the mentorship of Dr. Jessy Abouarab (WGSS) and collaboration of various campus departments and student organizations, including (AACC), the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX, (FBWLA), and the LSU Student Government Black Caucus.

With a total of 65 attendees, mostly students, the event was a resounding success. The participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to engage in a meaningful discussion about black femicide. They also showed a strong desire to continue learning about the intercultural dynamics of betrayal trauma and its impact on the socialization, victimization, and criminalization of Black women victims of sexual and domestic violence.

LSU’s Creative Writing Program is excited to announce the new Delta Mouth Reading Series, an extension of its student-run Delta Mouth Literary Festival.

On October 21, the Delta Mouth Reading Series brings to campus LSU alumnus and author E.M. Tran who will read from her debut novel Daughters of the New Year, a lively, spellbinding tale about the extraordinary women within a Vietnamese immigrant family—and the ancient zodiac legend that binds them together.

Following the reading, the author will participate in a conversation with Dr. James Nguyen H. Spencer, Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School.

The event will be held on the LSU campus in the Grand Salon of the French House on October 21 at 6pm and is free and open to the public.

The event is co-sponsored by the JF Taylor Endowed Professorship in English, the Asian, Asian American Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Caucus, the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies program, and the LSU Ogden Honors College. The reception following the event is hosted by LSU Dining.
